Pros

Vail attracts really good people. Good talent, hard workers, etc. I found most individual contributors to be capable, competent, engaging. And the perks are pretty solid, re: PTO, ski passes, etc. They want to make skiing more accessible to people with different cultural and financial backgrounds, as well as literally more physically accessible. They are one of the biggest ski resort companies in the world, and are continuing to expand.

Cons

The department I worked in was toxic. By the end, I was praying to get sick so I wouldn't have to go to work. Based on feedback from previous employees and those who stayed behind, it hasn't improved in years. Leadership has no plan and blames people working for them for not delivering their bad and poorly considered ideas. They talk about DEI and caring for their employees. And maybe they do in a different department. But I don't think it's worth finding out.

Pros

The company is awesome - it's eco-conscious, treats its employees well, offers insanely good benefits and perks (such as hotel discounts and a free ski pass). Overall the people are very intelligent and driven. My compensation was good as well.

Cons

My personal experience was a disappointing one. I was hired under the director, who I consider to be a great leader, but about 2 months in, my colleague was promoted above me. She was great at her job tasks, but seemed to be untrained in managerial skills and was difficult to work under - oftentimes contradicting herself, micromanaging constantly when she said she didn't like to... she also had a very narrow viewpoint that left little room for creative freedom or, put simply, doing anything in any way besides her own. It was obvious that she was new at managing, and very little training was offered to me because she was "too busy," yet she demanded perfection. She made it apparent when she was underwhelmed with me and that bred constant insecurity and lack of confidence in myself in the role. She was hot and cold with what appeared to be a forced steely demeanor. It was an unfortunate experience all around and I was ultimately let go with no probation period, no explicit warning, and no opportunity to search for other jobs within the company - all things that were promised to me by my manager. Instead, she chose to use her cold "leader" attitude to eliminate me swiftly like the poor business decision that I obviously was.

Pros

Great industry! Helping people enjoy our mountain communities is perk number 1. People are a pillar in any business and Vail has wonderful people who care and work hard to collectively carry the company forward. Meaningful core values (though lack of integrity in action-see below).

Cons

Most recently the executive leadership team announced (via mass email) a mandatory return to in office work 3 days per week for all employees within a 50 mile radius of headquarters (the entire Denver metro area). At face value this seems fair enough as any company can choose to adjust their work policies as they see fit. However the concern is that for years the company has had a strong affirming stance around remote work that outlined their core foundational beliefs such as; "Flexible remote work allows us to honor flexibility and choice while providing access to a larger pool of talented people, and to create teams with a broader diversity of backgrounds, experiences and perspectives within our company." "We believe we can be successful regardless of where we choose to work; performance is based on outcomes not proximity." These are beliefs that many people share and bought into whole heartedly when they joined this company. Now they have vanished. There have been no accommodations offered other than making sure we feel "supported" and "empowered" to choose to find employment elsewhere. We recently were named by Newsweek as one of the Most Trustworthy Companies in America, but for many internally that certainly does not feel like the case.
