Pros

Project work can be challenging and interesting. Some good processes (hardware and software) in place that ensure quality products are produced and projects are delivered.

Cons

No real career progression. Outside hires seem to be favored over internal candidates. For promotion it seems you need to leave and then come back in a different position. Company performance not communicated with technical staff. Its hard/impossible to know if hard work is helping company bottom line.

Pros

Transcore maintains and fosters a cooperative environment among its many locations that makes it easy to obtain resources for a project even on very little notice. Most of the people in the San Diego software development offices are highly intelligent and easy to work with. They take a solid engineering approach to their software design and internally, product quality supercedes deadlines. They tend to do things the right way from the beginning, making it easy to maintain the projects in the long term. TransCore had a familiar feel, and the satellite project offices are well supported even from the highest levels of corporate management.

Cons

Because a great deal of TransCore's work is project-based, they tend to be hawkish on expenses especially in those project offices. Purchases are made on the cheap and often, engineers may have to make due with what's available rather than being well equipped to complete their goal. Salaries are minimal, and retirement benefits nonexistent at the non-management level. While this is not completely atypical of contract shops, it makes TransCore a difficult place to stay for long if you are an individual with a family to support. They do offer a good work/life balance, but it comes at the expense of salary.
