The Fall of the San Jose Sharks

Pros

- Exciting atmosphere - Great opportunity to connect with the community

Cons

- Extremely weak leadership - Heavy focus on "the numbers" that completely dismisses the human and moral aspect of business (i.e. It's reported that the EVP has taken programming and events from the Sharks Foundation and turned them into for-profit initiatives to boost numbers) - "Burn and churn" mentality - Extremely low salaries that makes it difficult for employees to live where they work - No coaching, learning or development opportunities - Company values are not recognized or reinforced - Despite it being a small office, employees rarely know each other outside of their immediate departments

Constant chaos, understaffed

Pros

Occasional free tickets to games, plus a great name on your resume. Convenient location to commute with free parking downtown. Remote work has become more acceptable, but only since the pandemic, and only in pockets of the company. (Some managers still don't allow it, even for jobs that can work from home)

Cons

Leadership can't get out of it's own way, and fails to effectively share important information with the bulk of employees. Way too much focus on process over impact. Constant budget and resource issues to the point where many individuals are doing the work of two. Pay is very low and inconsistent, no chance for bonus for most employys. HR has clearly been instructed to create career development opportunities but those take time and fall on top of a crazy workload.Same for diversity exercises. Some managers watch the clock for salaried employees which doesn't make sense. All this and leadership seems confused why turnover is very high. Other sports teams don't have these issues.

Bad leadership

Pros

Perks of attending sharks games and concerts

Cons

Leadership isn’t strong, very militant like in their actions and don’t listen to staff recommendations. Too many VP’s for a small organization
