Pros

Most coworkers are knowledgeable and helpful.

Cons

Five managers in my first year, the turnover rate is scary. It’s all the more problematic because there is no clear overarching strategy meaning that with every new manager, priorities shifted and we started plans over - wasting time and resources. It is frustrating and demotivating. There are also very few opportunities for growth. It also seems like hiring practices are based on tokenism, which is worrisome given the guiding principles of the organization. The environment is toxic and it makes it uncomfortable to share ideas and opinions. Management will not address issues and instead waste donor money hiring consultants. Management also have clear favourites, which creates weird dynamics. I know colleagues who have been bullied by management in attempts to push them out of the organization. Most people working there are miserable. I hesitated to post review because it’s very critical and I prefer to avoid negative posts online but this job took a toll on my mental health and I encourage people considering opportunities with Oxfam Canada to reconsider. I hope Oxfam Canada is able to turn things around as the programmes it implements are really important.

Pros

The admin and professional level employees that I knew while working there were thoughtful, caring people. The work environment (dress code) is casual, depending on the team a person is on the work environment will be change but in general if a person needs to work from home they can. Benefits and PTO were very generous.

Cons

The salary for administrative employees is not a liveable wage. The senior management is an incredibly privileged lot who seem to be entirely out of touch with the company the day to day lives of the people Oxfam serves and their coworkers in lower positions. They are outrageously overpaid. If you are at the beginning of your career you will not grow at Oxfam, this is a place to land while you continue your job search, if you are a a specialist in a humanities field then you might just luck out and get hired and make bank. Anyone below a specialist position is treated like a dumb child while handling a major amount of tasks. Misuse of donor funds.

Pros

Worthwhile cause, meet new people, interesting and varied work, no two days the same, helpful area management. Regular management meetings.

Cons

Unrealistic expectations for part time managers- full time job part time pay. No real authority as Oxfam proposes that volunteers run the shop, yet tel managers to be entrepreneurs, and to treat the shop as your own: direct conflict with volunteers. No support for the managers when dealing with problem volunteers. Too much unnecessary admin. Appalling waste of money via shops. Appalling lack of training. Managerslayed off against each other. Too pushy re sales targets etc. - relentless and unreasonable expectations when you're dealing with donated stock!
