Pros

Great benefits, coworkers are driven, MIT itself is a great organization

Cons

The workload does not match the pay. The years of experience required to essentially be an assistant is unrealistic. The workload balance in the Office of Philanthropic Partnerships specifically is not great and quickly became a toxic environment.

Pros

Excellent benefits. Wonderful environment to learn about cutting-edge research on wide variety of subjects.

Cons

MIT is very decentralized; each organization and group has its own unique culture. Some staff groups tend to be hierarchical and old-school in the management style.

THE MIT PRESS

Pros

- Great people/culture - Cool benefits from MIT (free MBTA pass, good benefits package, pension), lots of time off - Can travel for conferences - Can join taskforces/groups to meet others at the Press and expand day to day duties - Overall rewarding work

Cons

- Wages below market rate across the board - Difficult to advance. Higher positions are usually filled by outside hires. Little transparency on when and how promotions will happen - Many employees work over time and are forced to take on too much work due to strained departmental resources (for no additional compensation) - Director’s vision can be confusing. Seems like investment is not being brought back to actual people who work for the Press and make it successful, but is spent on other “interesting” things that seem like distractions
