Pros

no one really cares about what you do so you can basically do whatever (even though they say they do).

Cons

1) sexism, whether it is implicit or explicit, is prevalent. there are less than 5 full time women. the director interrupts the female employees more than the male employees (i'm a male employee and i've even noticed this). some of the lab members refer to other women in the lab as "girl." 2) no health insurance. they find ways to skimp your benefits, such as by saying you're getting a raise, but then take away health insurance such that the net difference is that you lose money 3) excessive waste. there are so many projects that are not innovative, copy other existing ideas (with slight modification) and just waste money buying services or things that don't end up getting used

Pros

The students. Exceptionally smart, good natured, and really the only reason to work at MIT.

Cons

The "middle-management" level of administration and senior faculty. Insecure, megalomaniacal, petty, backstabbing, selfish, out of touch, controlling, often unethical, and often don't care about the students.

Pros

Compensation and benefits are decent. But NOT worth it.

Cons

Politics, politics POLITICS. You basically have to be married with kids or male to get any advancement. Very toxic work environment. Depends largely on the department, but I was working in a soul-crushing environment. It didn't matter how well you did your job, but if you make one mistake, hell hath no fury. No real training to speak of. We were expected to know the job on day 1. Management was not receptive to questions. Questions were met by answers of "I'm not going to tell you how to do your job" and "As the (insert job title here), you should know what to do." I wasted 6 years of my life here, and pretty much destroyed all my personal relationships in the process due to emotional/psychological breakdowns.
