Pros

Crate and Barrel has gorgeous products and overall the environment is nice to work in. (Clean, great customers and awesome associates) The discount is awesome and the company (as a whole) does a lot for charity which is cool.

Cons

I worked at the Woodfield (#107) location for a few years. When I started, there was this positive energy about the place- the associates got along well, everyone took a lot of pride in their work and really enjoyed the process of helping customers, selling, and pitching in wherever help was needed. However, over the past year or so, things have significantly changed. Many long-term associates have been let go, and other new ones have chosen to leave shortly after starting due to the high pressure environment at this location. The store isn't as focused on providing customer service as it is pushing credit cards and collecting customer email information that can be used for marketing purposes or sold to outside parties. Instead of being well staffed, the store is now under-staffed and requiring extra hours from employees- and while extra hours aren't always a bad thing, it can be difficult to accommodate when you work a second job and are trying to strike any kind of a work/life balance between the two. The feeling in the store now is just very heavy and sad... The management there once really promoted team work and comradery, but now, it's just a series of flippant text messages and micromanagement. I don't even shop here anymore- instead I make any Crate purchases online or at other locations. I would not recommend working here- at least not under the current management.

Pros

Crate & Barrel searches the globe for merchandise that offers great design, remarkable quality, and timeless style. The company therefore attracts employees from all walks of life, and fosters excellence with stupendous comradery and frequent training. Crate & Barrel is very inclusive and encourages collaboration. It values the opinions of its workers and customers with the utmost respect. It is also very proud of its Illinois heritage and loyal partnership with its vendors around the world. Lastly they offer great innovation and trend-setting style that is simply iconic.

Cons

The showroom hours can be long and tough, especially with lots of customers shopping, but the teamwork makes it all worth it. Wages were fair but raises were very modest. However, the path to career advancement is great many of my coworkers and myself all received promotions that took us to management, corporate, or furniture sales.

Pros

Committed sales, merchandise, stock and manager staff, willing to work hard and enthusiastically support one another. Real teamwork and camaraderie. Overall, very nice, loyal customers.

Cons

Corporate shows little respect for the sales associates and store managers in providing an environment in which employees feel valued despite great service and teamwork by their employees. Therefore, the turnover is very high. They do not provide a living wage and have cut down considerably on hours. Those earning commission are terminated if they do not meet their quarterly goals despite the fact that management has no one to replace the terminated employee, thereby short staffing the remaining furniture associates. This also forces managers to have to cover furniture sales in a juggling act with all of their other responsibilities. The corporation values only the meeting of KPIs. Well, inconsistent quality of product, poorly manufactured with no quality control. This is not the work environment and customer engagement Gordon Segal created over 50 years ago. In it's rush to compete with other housewares and home furnishing outlets, online and in stores, Crate and Barrel has lost the very soul that created it. It used to be an engaging and humanly warm place to work. No more. Just a faceless numbers crunch.
