Misleading culture and poor management

Pros

Free bed set when you join.

Cons

The interview process alone took several months and was painfully slow. Throughout the process and after I joined the company, I learned that the company had misled me about what I would consider to be key facts, including the range of compensation for the role, the company history around paying out bonuses, and why the role I was hired for was open (which was represented to me as a newly created role rather than a backfill for someone who left the company after just a few months). My manager seemed to have little to no prior management experience and was a micromanager, my on-boarding was non-existent, and I felt the work environment to be hostile and toxic (this was my only experience where I witnessed leadership actively peer pressure employees to drink alcohol during work hours) and leadership left me with little to no confidence in their ability to successfully position the company in the very competitive market.

Chaos and Disorganization

Pros

Many kind and intelligent employees with great experience. A free mattress and bedding when you start. Discounts on product. A beautiful large office in lower Manhattan with no people inside. Good work life balance because no one cares about you or the work you do.

Cons

No coherent leadership, vision or strategy. Any sort of culture of innovation and investment into research has disappeared long ago. The company still acts like its mission statement is valid, but it is smoke and mirrors. The CEO has surrounded herself with former colleagues that "yes" her on every front, and their is a culture of a cool kids club in senior leadership who give zero transparency to the rest of the company. The company was bought by a young private equity firm, who needs to sell the business at a profit soon to create value and tell a positive story. That is the sole motivation of the leadership now, sell and make their money while laying off hard working people indiscriminately to improve margin. In my 2 years at Casper, the company conducted 4 rounds of layoffs. They've done about 4 more since I left. Cannot build a culture when the entire company turns over every 18 months.

Pros

Lots of talented Store Managers who are supportive and engaging peers. Generous discount on amazing products. Learn how to operate a successful retail business. Nice store environment.

Cons

Growth at all costs mindset for years. Constantly restructuring teams, changing roles, laying people off, etc. The amount of money spent on everything from marketing to retail store build outs is beyond disproportionate to revenue, it’s not surprising that the company is still unprofitable. Rapid NSOs outpaced any meaningful structure with product allocation and inventory management. Casper is terribly behind with technology, one example being you have to manually scan out products sold in stores to properly account for inventory levels. Another example is lacking the ability to send a customer who visited a link to purchase online and ultimately attribute that sale to retail. Consistent promotional pricing bugs. It is a mystery as to how sales targets are forecasted and there is no commission for how much you contribute. Expectations to work alone for hours, sometimes the entire day and over 8 hours when staffing gets tight.
