Pros

1. Business oriented - there's no engineering representation on Wayfair's leadership page! 2. Thrifty in spending - don't expect additional equity or any spectacular increase in your pay while you are employed here. 3. Absentee leadership - all decisions flow down from business without a care in the world about tech debt.

Cons

1. Tech debt - to give you an idea, Wayfair only has one real environment for developers and almost all testing of features are performed in production. The cost for actually maintaining a development or staging environment is apparently too high. We'd rather have our website stop working for customers than fix a fundamental issue. But we are super business oriented in cramming in as many features as poosible! 2. Quantity over quality in code - unit tests? Linting? They're turned off because engineering leadership decided that the key metric to target is increased speed to output. 3. Quantity over quality in engineers - the median tenure is under a year and the turnover is extremely high. Absolute zero value is placed on time at Wayfair.

Pros

Great for someone who only cares about getting a well known name on their resume.

Cons

Wayfair recruiting is the most toxic and dysfunctional environment I've ever witnessed. Not shockingly, recruiting has the HIGHEST turnover rate in the company and they go through people faster than toilet paper, which is also what you'll be treated like while working in this environment. Over my time at Wayfair, I experienced completely unrealistic expectations, downright ridiculous metrics, a culture of backstabbing, and highly disturbing unchecked employment practices that created an extremely hostile environment. Wayfair has a completely arbitrary 6 tiered leveling system that allows for highly discriminatory hiring and promotion practices by "misguided" managers, who generally act more like politicians than leaders. Wayfair is deservedly well known in Boston to have a massive diversity and inclusion problem, and yet they perpetuate the problem with untrained managers with zero accountability. If for some reason you decide to join, here's what it will look like: Expect to work 50-60 hours per week in an extremely high volume sales job masquerading as a recruiting job. You'll be asked to hit unrealistic goals set by people who have never recruited. You won't be allowed to make a single decision about literally anything, and your day to day work will be more like an entry level data entry intern or used car salesman. You'll rarely see anyone in recruiting last over a year, and if you do, be VERY wary of them. Lastly, and I can't stress this enough, only expect to see that good old "Wayfair jungle-gym" only if you play a politics game. Unless this sounds ok to you, AVOID at all costs.

Pros

- Opportunities to travel. - Work benefits include gym membership, company funded team outings and massages. - Office facilities.

Cons

- Six-month review process used as a means of pitting employees against each other and to scaremonger. Employees are actively encouraged to provide anonymous and often unconstructive peer feedback which lacks clear-cut examples and ultimately does not allow for positive outcome. Consequently, this results in a lack of cohesion amongst team members and leads to an anxious atmosphere within the office and a lack of job security. - Targets are unrealistic, inconsistent, ambiguous and poorly communicated to employees. - The high turnover of staff is alarming (monthly dismissals/resignations are a common feature of the Wayfair experience). - Employees feel undervalued and face chastisement for failing to hit targets, irrespective of other positive contributions to the company. - As a result of individual pressure on management, new employee training/support is often overlooked and managers do not have sufficient time to reflect and improve themselves. - Certain members of the management team are widely unprofessional and directly contribute to office gossip. Don’t be fooled by the apparent friendly, relaxed and informal atmosphere… Wayfair is ruthless.
