Fear in MSC

Recommend

Pros

Benefits package is decent even if it's overpriced

Cons

The MSC organization is a horror show, driven by the CMO. She gets involved everywhere and one poor interaction with her either stifles your career or gets your fired outright. Culture is: work extremely long hours and be thankful you work for Vail... if you are considering a job here you should think long and hard before proceeding. Yes, it can happen to you.

A dystopian nightmare

Pros

Free pass Good health insurance Smart people (who all leave when they discover the below)

Cons

Vail resorts corporate is a nightmare and the larger marketing team is dysfunctional to the point of comedy. Different lines of business willfully misrepresent data and sales numbers and refuse to accept what the analytics team tells them. There is plenty of talk about how analytics needs to have a seat at the table, only to turn around and ignore every recommendation. Business teams also have a strong tendency to tell a story then force data to fit that story - even if it is patently false and misleading. 2 + 2 actually equals 5 at Vail. As many have said, the CMO runs the entire team through a culture of fear and middle management all falls in line, passing unrealistic amounts of work to subordinates. If you tell the business it takes 50 hours to do something, they'll tell you that it's better for the business to do it in 20. For a business that regularly adds new resorts, it's odd that the requests of teams supporting that integration are constantly ignored. The core business also likes to showcase interesting analysis and projects, but much work is outsourced to shoddy vendors who produce work that the analytics team has to redo in its entirety. Some teams can actually use their 'unlimited vacation' but this is a farce in most of MSC and especially analytics. Good luck taking any time off with all of the fires that you're putting out all the time and all of the data you're making up. Do you want to be let down every day? Work at Vail Resorts corporate!

Pros

-Free ski pass -Great people -Well recognized

Cons

This company is a bureaucratic nightmare. It somehow takes 2 people to do 1 job because of all the unnecessary approvals and input required. Expect endless and pointless meetings, unnecessary back and forth between teams and an overall lack of knowledge of the ski industry and product as a whole. The people are the saving grace of this company as they are passionate and fun to work with. The company itself is a hierarchical mess. The process to get anything done is painful and full of egos. The creativity is consistently sucked out of the room by safe decisions. There is a reason Vail Resorts is widely recognized within the industry as a soulless conglomerate. From a business standpoint, they are incredibly smart. They entice potential employees with 'perks' such as a free pass, 'decent' pay and an opportunity to work with a cool product. The truth is Vail Resorts has all the stifling culture of working for a large company without the pay. My recommendation is to find a company more rooted within the outdoor industry or to work for a company that will pay you better.
