Pros

A lot of free product (although this is provided by vendors not Ulta), amazing health insurance, great opportunity for salon professionals to build a real career and make sufficient money, core values are actually used in coaching and reviews which gives you a great foundation as a GM to develop and help your people.

Cons

I worked under 7 DMs in my time at Ulta and only two were honest people who believed in doing what is right by their people. The good DMs had low turnover so make sure to ask about this. When credit cards were introduced the message was that there were be no intense goals that this was simply something our guests requested-this was a bold face lie. Ask anyone who is still there at any level. The operational work load is designed where the only way you can keep up is if every member of your team is both tenured and fast as well as efficient every single day and even then they still spring things on you at the last minute and you will certainly fall behind and work long hours regularly. If you are someone who cannot be ok with being behind at times and taking the heat this job will stress you to the max. For the last 3 Christmas Eve’s we had mandatory calls with DMs a couple of days prior saying that senior leaders say we have to stay open two additional hours (super fun message to try to deliver to your over worked team who just wants to be with family). As a GM you WILL work on Thanksgiving Day starting around 3pm.

All Talk, No Walk

Pros

Because DM presence is basically non-existent you have the ability to build a team culture that is much better than the overall culture of the company Gratis Making connections with guests (in the rare times you can actually spend making it personal with them)

Cons

Constant changes to schedule with the expectation that everyone be flexible Processes change constantly-the company is more reactive than proactive No focus on development All anyone cares about is how much money you are making, DMs don't make it personal and treat you like a human, they just come in to your store, check off boxes, tell you what you are doing wrong then leave The absolute lowest payroll model I have ever had to work with in any company-sometimes you can't even deter theft through service because the guest to employee ratio is so high DMs don't elevate themselves, they are cliquey and make it very obvious who their favorites are No trust with upper management which leaves you unable to share thoughts or views that are not aligned with direction given Total disconnect between corporate and stores Unless you hit a certain volume, you do not have a Co-Manager, leaving many things on the GMs plate that they are not able to delegate since they do not allow any lower management take on responsibilities that they are completely capable of doing

Corporate Tolerates Harassment and Bullying

Pros

Honestly there aren't many pros.

Cons

Low Pay, no commission. At the location I work at, the store manager is nothing but a bully. She frequently harasses and demeans the entire staff, and has even told employees they needed to leave because she didn't personally like them. An associate manager frequently said inappropriate and offensive remarks about women, which the store manager laughed at and ignored my complaints about. Almost every employee, myself included, has contacted the District Manager as well as Corporate Human Resources, but they offer no help and basically tell you your word means nothing compared to the manager. They are allowed to say and do whatever they like. I have never worked anywhere that valued their employees less.
