Do Not Work Here

Pros

The residents of the shelter are wonderful people.

Cons

There is no process for training new employees. They basically just showed me where to work and left me to figure things out. This lead to many mistakes, which I was always blamed for. Often the first time I would hear about something was when I "in trouble" for not doing it. There was very poor communication. Management would make a decision about a family that I was working with and then not tell me. I would learn of the decision when I acted on the information I had that was no longer correct. I found working there to be extremely stressful and I was very unhappy. I was actively looking for another job when I was terminated. I had been suffering from severe depression and it was causing performance issues. I spoke to my supervisor about what I was going through and repeatedly asked her if my job was in jeopardy. She always assured me that I was fine and that they wanted to support me and my job was not at risk, right up until they fired me. The environment is also very "clique-ish". Some of the managers are friends with their staff outside of work and they carry that into the work place. It makes you feel very excluded. It also shows when your requests go unanswered but the individuals that are friends get everything right away.

Blatant Favoritism

Pros

Amazing mission. Very important resource for the community. Most staff are great.

Cons

Blatant favoritism (staff and clients), gaslighting, micromanagement, CEO pits employees against each other, CEO treats employees poorly to the point where they want to resign, low pay with little opportunity for raises, very little opportunity for advancement, no support from upper management, very little training, no consistency, disappointing benefits, blatant racism and homophobia with little to no consequences for staff who display this openly hostile behavior, community partners are hesitant to make referrals to The Julian Center.
