Pros

A great mission, committed employees.

Cons

Lack of support from upper management, lack of pay equity, unprofessional behavior from the President, unacknowledged racial bias.

Pros

My direct supervisor (who is no longer there)was open to new ideas and allowed creativity in Youth Programming.

Cons

-This company needs to have open two-way conversations with staff. - I felt the CEO and Board could use ongoing training on Class and Racism. Allowing groups of people to tour a building where abused women, men and children live is disgraceful. The people living in the shelter are not zoo animals for folks to gawk at. -I felt that the CEO needs to treat ALL Staff as professionals. Instead of Youth Programming being treated like Mammies. There is staff running the Respite Care earning the same as her staff. When will she get a raise? When Youth Programming staff died there was no personal contact or comforting words for staff that worked with the deceased. This is a sign of callous and uncaring leadership.

A Challenging Mission with Incredible Rewards

Pros

This is a renowned organization in the Indianapolis community with a great legacy and a critical mission. Working here means knowing that you are making a difference, that there will be great opportunities to grow personally and professionally, that you are part of a team dedicated to improving client experience and part of an innovative organization applying the newest research and techniques to serving survivors.

Cons

The work is never ending and direct service can be extremely demanding and wearisome. Unfortunately, burn out is high. Working here long term requires a good support system, self-awareness and somewhere to process, professional maturity and an ability to maintain a focus on the mission. Due to the nature of the work staff and clients are susceptible to a corrosive negative worldview that can lead to feeling stuck. This work is not for everyone.
