Pros

The mission is great. But that's the only thing going for this place.

Cons

Horrible management that abuses staff. Very controlling and emotionally abusive AT A DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SHELTER!! The CEO is one of the worst people I've ever known...she made it clear from my first day that she didn't like me and wasn't the one who hired me. Made it impossible for me to advance my career because she had to approve of it. My manager flat out told me that getting into management for me wouldn't ever happen "because Catherine doesn't like you". Also, while I was pregnant they tried writing me up because I "refused" to climb a tall wire shelving unit to grab linens for an intake AT 38 WEEKS PREGNANT. I had to get a doctor's note. A very heavy book donation came in and the CEO just watched me struggle as I tried lifting them. Again, towards the end of my pregnancy. I received multiple write ups while pregnant; most of them discriminatory due to my "condition". I knew what they were doing--I was salaried and they did NOT want to pay my maternity leave at my rate (50 % pay). Week 39 pregnant, I was demoted and pay was drastically cut. I went into labor during a snow storm in December and the staff just watched me struggle to clean my car off. WHILE IN LABOR. This place is the most corrupt workplace and I would stay FAR AWAY until management changes!! I took my maternity leave and was able to go on interviews and get a new job on their dime. I'm SO glad I left!! And this isn't just me. There are SO MANY people walking off the job right now due to being treated so poorly.

The CEO/management

Pros

Some employees are great. They get it and get the job done.

Cons

The CEO and another directors are absolutely terrible. The CEO is terrible. She does not treat a majority of the staff with dignity. She likes to say everyone is a team but she is a liar. She is not a team player. She smiles at you but then will stab you in the back. Her minions are just as bad. They care more about how they are perceived by the outside than the inside. This place is terrible.

Blatant Favoritism

Pros

Amazing mission. Very important resource for the community. Most staff are great.

Cons

Blatant favoritism (staff and clients), gaslighting, micromanagement, CEO pits employees against each other, CEO treats employees poorly to the point where they want to resign, low pay with little opportunity for raises, very little opportunity for advancement, no support from upper management, very little training, no consistency, disappointing benefits, blatant racism and homophobia with little to no consequences for staff who display this openly hostile behavior, community partners are hesitant to make referrals to The Julian Center.
