The Pros and Cons of Working at Home

Pros

If you want a call center position where you can exercise more control over your matrix, try a virtual call center. You don't have to worry about traffic, or whether or not there's a line for the microwave at lunch. All you have to worry about is whether or not your rig is capable of handling the tech on their end. It pays a little less than working in a traditional call center, but it evens out since you don't have to pay for gas. Also, the benefits may be small, but they beat the heck out of what most other jobs in this pay range have to offer. And office politics seem less petty when they're coming over email and in a chat room than they do face to face.

Cons

Office politics still exist. Coworker friction still exists. Some are abusing private chat to facilitate what they're doing, and while that makes it easier for them to get caught at it, the Team Leads and Coaches are so harried that they're probably not paying attention. Getting someone's attention can be more difficult in this environment, since you can't just walk up to someone to talk to them, and they might be engaged in three other convos when you're trying to communicate with them and you have no way of knowing that before you make your bid for their time. So, the lines of communication can get jammed.

Pros

The hiring process is efficient and well organized. New hires' training is good overall.

Cons

Salary sucks. They terminate people without due notice which is something required by law. And when you voluntaryily leave the Company, they will withhold your salary for 60-90 days even if you do not have any outstanding financial accountabilities or obligations. Again, this is an unfair and unlawful labor practice under the Labor Code. Most of all, the HCD people are cold, uncaring people who either responds to employees' concerns and queries in a very untimely manner or they do not respond at all.

Pros

There is never a lack of complex projects and issues to resolve. There is rarely a dull moment. You work with people all over the world which is interesting and fun.

Cons

The competition between employees is relentless. Even your boss competes with you (and your bosses boss) which is tiring. The management is a weak in terms of professional development and mentoring. There is a lack of seasoned, motivational leaders. Management does not give firm feedback when coworkers are rude or mean. Being cut-throat and mean is not discouraged. People typically do not have a filter when they communicate, blurting opinions with out the knowledge to back it up. There are rarely promotions in IT and when there are people are left scratching their heads as to why the people chosen were promoted at all. Management and non-management do not respect boundaries of ownership in projects and tasks. They will openly and without regard, take over tasks or portions of your work/responsibilities. It’s awkward when your management does it, as you don’t want to anger them by asking them not to step on toes.
