Pros

Some strength in the brand is retained within the professional community.

Cons

Sunstar could have become a strong, solid medium-sized company with a great workplace. However years of mismanagement have led to poor strategy, a toxic culture, slow sales, and high turnover. The business has been under-invested in for years, making it especially vulnerable as new, larger competitors enter GUM’s major categories. Despite some senior management turnover, Sunstar remains a hugely hierarchical organization with no empowerment and has extremely slow decision-making, limited strategic planning, a weak future as new competitors enter, poor teamwork across functions and a toxic blame culture. Senior management has understood the business challenges and cultural issues for years and years but has time and time again chosen inaction. A desire for meaningful change does not exist and many senior leaders have been at Sunstar so long, they lack understanding of what defines a great company with a vibrant culture. Employees are not valued and the better ones receive more work with no financial incentives and then eventually leave. Human resources leadership is particularly poor, showing no concern whatsoever for training, leadership development, or organizational culture. Professional office staff are treated like hourly unskilled labor and people decisions appear to be based on minimization of payroll costs and preservation of existing senior management roles.

Pros

I worked for Sunstar for 6 years. The people and connections I made are invaluable and the benefits are fair. Salary is a little lower than expected in the area but if I knew it would end the way it did, I would have ran far, far away. It's a shame you have to apply at least one star in a review on here.

Cons

I took a risk accepting the position, being promised I would be on a path of career success within the company. The company went through a restructure last year and many of my colleagues were let go or worse, they were demoted with changes in title and roles, many without their knowledge. The same thing happened to me. A year later, the restructuring continues and turnover is very high. Management expects everyone to be workhorses and has little appreciation for what employees do or their accomplishment. Job satisfaction is low. The good employees don’t seem to stay and are not very engaged, have burnout, or lost their passion. If you want to go back to high school, Sunstar is for you. If you want a broken promise and snobby management, Sunstar is setting the bar.

Pros

Building is fairly new with good lighting and bathrooms. Employee cafeteria and vending machines are convenient, though eating at your desk is not allowed. There is an annual Christmas lunch. Location is good, right off the expressway.

Cons

Company went through a reorganization in 2018, but still shows little signs for hope. Sales performance has still suffered, and no bonuses have been paid out. The sales and marketing teams have flattened. Roles have become extremely specialized and confusion run rampant throughout the building. One person is “in charge” and makes all the decisions, big and small, which leaves little room for autonomy and empowerment. Company is overly complex and bureaucratic for its small size, with too much focus on policies and procedures. This stifles creativity and decreases morale. The workplace is demotivating to employees. It’s a very low-trust work culture. There is constant blame rather than people being held accountable for actions. Absolutely no career advancement or training is offered – not one person in engineering, marketing, research, accounting, or operations has been promoted in the last 3 years. Employees are very skilled, but undervalued and underpaid. Equivalent professionals at other companies, even smaller in size, get paid much more and are offered more perks. HR is very unfriendly. There is no discipline throughout the company. Leadership does not communicate, set priorities or inspire employees. Many of them sit in their offices and are intimidating.
