Pros

Free coffee. Close to Caltrain.

Cons

I worked for corporate Philz. They hired two of us in the same role under two different managers, both of whom repeatedly quipped that they had no idea what to do with two people in the role. That should've been my first clue. Naive and eager to please, I asked my manager to be transparent and let me know if he had any feedback for me during training. He assured me he would. He didn't. HR did, though. No later than a mere week after I had started at Philz, I was tapped on the shoulder, escorted into a meeting room, and coldly told I was out. I stopped processing anything beyond that point and unfortunately started crying on the spot (not my proudest moment). I was shocked. I hadn't screwed up royally. Maybe they firmly decided they didn't need two people in the same role and cast off the one with less experience. Who knows. A couple weeks after this lovely event transpired, the CEO emailed me and some other new hires to welcome us to the Philz family. Anyway, I no longer drink their coffee out of spite.

Pros

They’re always hiring (but this isn’t necessarily a pro)

Cons

Pay is set to minimum wage with no pay raises/increases. You may actually work 30+ hours weekly but still won’t be eligible for health care. Health care if offered is uncompetitive and overpriced anyway. Older stores have broken, dirty, needs repair equipment and many of it not food grade plastics. Coworkers and team leads gossip about others causing good workers to quit. Opening of new stores when existing stores are understaffed, overworked and not compensated for such issues. A very distinct disconnect between management in and out of stores with all other employees. Refusal to close stores when understaffed or sick unless it benefits management directly. Expectation falls on employees to run the store because managers and head office are unbelievably hands off and rarely help. Yearly engagement surveys are required but no one ever follows up on the concerns or issues listed in them. Staff that calls out every single day and face no verbals, written warnings or termination. Expectation staff not management need to find coverage if understaffed or when sick issues arise. Did I mention the pay for a barista will NEVER increase more than minimum wage no matter how well performing or tenured you may be. This is just to mention SOME of the things this company needs to fix immediately.

Pros

-Free coffee / food -Relaxed atmosphere and very inclusive; free to express self at work -Most coworkers are cool and chill

Cons

-Horrible pay and everyone starts at the same rate even if you have lots of experience in the industry -Obvious that corporate doesn't really care about the baristas and expects high turnover -Stores are not built with baristas or productivity in mind -Lack of consequences for baristas who consistently underperform -Health insurance offerings are extremely expensive for what they pay us -"Full time" is never 40hours a week -Benefits are gatekept by a 30hr/wk minimum which you will not meet unless you ask your store lead
