Pros

The discounts at Old Navy were pretty good, they seemed better than a lot of other retail stores in the area.

Cons

The managers at my store seemed to really play favorites, and they were very sales oriented. They were not happy unless every single customer walked out the door with an Old Navy card. It actually got to the point where some of our managers would harass our customers for example not let them into a fitting room, until the customer had listened to the entire Old Navy Card promotion. It's one thing to be a good sales person and another to harass people to get what you want.

Pros

The brand is owned by GAP Inc which is undeniably one the most iconic brands ever! Some might say that comes with a sense of job security unless you work for GAP ops Banana Republic. It’s no secret that Old Navy, along with Athleta, have both been floating Gap and Banana Republic for two decades now. They pay well compared to othe clothing retailers because almost always Old Navy stores do 4-5 times the volume of the other specialty retailers in the same malls. Health benefits are great and employed contribution is the lowest I have ever had to pay for my Heath insurance with any other employer.

Cons

However, since you are not required to wear their clothes the discount leaves ALOT to be desired! You get 50% off but only off of the original price. Often times buying the merchandise without your discount is cheaper than using it. Consistency is regards to processes, enforcing policies and following visual brand standards is non existent. There is a SOP (standard operating procedure) for everything but each person in the company will tell you it’s been updated but the manual has not.

Overall positive for retail

Pros

Can be fun. Plenty of other associates to get shifts covered if needed/plenty of shifts to be picked up if desired. Customers are usually positive and happy to be shopping there. The employee discount is great, plus first dibs on online return items for cheap. I never felt uncomfortable around other employees or management, they do not discriminate and are inclusive. I had 5 store managers over 5 years (yup) and only took minor issue with one. Department leads are almost always great as they usually used to be associates themselves.

Cons

It’s retail. It can be hard, repetitive and soul-sucking work. As a cashier they make you push store cards hard, tracking your numbers and check in with you every hour about your store card script, how you’re saying it, etc. I was there for 5 years and there was almost no way to move up in the company. Lots of outside hiring for higher positions. They WILL make you work Thanksgiving day, overnight into Black Friday.
