Was a great place

Pros

Nice UTC benefits, great network which helps when sourcing products to sell.

Cons

Poor upper management. The numbers are the only important thing, not management skills. Had some managers that valued employees - union and non-union. When the numbers slipped a little, they got railroaded out. Upper management places too many non experienced supervisors and managers in positions just because they are friends or work for low pay. Too many mean spirited managers.

Pros

Superior educational benefits, although they tax you toward the end of the year and in my case, take away half my check. So school isn't free, but paying 25% is better than having to pay it all.

Cons

Women are relegated to administrative positions. Apparently, ovaries are required to answer phones and to perform other menial tasks men are never asked to do. Otis prides itself on being "green" yet our office is contributing to deforestation with the massive amounts of paper being generated in the office.

Pros

They used to have good benefits and were relatively safe from layoffs. The co-workers are great.

Cons

Teamwork has been tossed aside. Company morale is extremely low. Leadership is based on the concept that "no one is more royal than the king", as one senior manager put it. Processes that should address these issues exist, but are so pie-in-the-sky that they cannot succeed. Results from employee surveys are spun to fit expectations. Those that can't be spun in a positive manner are solved by either adding on more required training, or rewording the surveys the next time. An example may illustrate the atmosphere: someone complained that the US flag outside the building either needed to be taken down at night, or illuminated if left up. The solution was to cut down the flagpole. I'm not kidding.
