Pros

- They sure know how to sell you this job in the interview process without telling you any information about what the day to day looks like or how you get paid.

Cons

- You will not get paid for the first 2-3 months you work there. They have what's called a 'PTAS' contract where you sign away your right to get paid and you will make absolutely nothing while you're still a PTAS agent. - This continues until you 'trigger.' Which is their word for signing your full time contract. In order to trigger you need to complete a 12-hour training course, pass your Life and Health Exam, and sell 3 policies and make over $1,500 in commission before you can even sign a contract to get paid. This all takes 2-3 months. - There is so much to learn and they don't have any structured method to provide you with the information you need to sell a policy. They expect you to just jump into the field and learn over your first two years. - They will try to convince you that their 'NYLIC U' is one of the best training sites in the industry, but most lessons end with "you'll learn this once you get in the field." So it doesn't do very much for you. - Basically, what I'm getting at is: if you want to not get paid for several months at the start, and you like being terrified of when you're next paycheck will be coming, and you like to have no clue what you're doing in your career for 1-2 years, then this is the job for you.

Thank you for your feedback. Training is an important part of how we prepare our agents to meet the challenging demands of a career in insurance and financial services. New agents participate in a rigorous training program, often recognized as one of the best in the industry. Throughout the course of their career, agents receive ongoing education, allowing them to expand their skills and serve our customers to the very best of their ability. For the first 3 years of an agent’s career, a manager is responsible for providing training, mentorship and support to help their agents succeed on their own. After this period, our agents are encouraged to have an entrepreneurial and independent mindset and proceed as if they are responsible with establishing their own financial services practice. We like to think of our agents as being in business “for themselves but not by themselves.” For this reason, this career is not for everyone. We take your concerns seriously and would like more information. We encourage you to email us at helpusimprove@newyorklife.com if you would like to share specific details about your experience.

Love my job

Pros

Flexibility. It's hard work but if you put your clients first, you will make awesome money. A lot of people get scared with commission but you make more in the long run- the officers and partners for this office do extremely well. They do a great job with reward and recognition. The trips when you succeed are amazing.

Cons

It's hard work. It's sales. It won't ever be easy. But when you get rolling, you will love your paycheck and the ability to feel like you are running your business. You will work A LOT in the beginning. Don't give up. Seriously. Stick with it and give it your all. After being in the business for a while it was all worth it. I take vacations when and for as long as I want. I make great money and if I want more... I work harder. If you don't succeed its only you to blame. Just do it. Talk to everyone. Don't be afraid of rejection. I'm passionate about what I do. Its heartbreaking to deliver death benefit checks but it makes you realize this business is not about the money. It's about helping people. And it's hard. But so worth it if you get off your butt and just do it.
