Pros

Excellent income potential, freedom to work for yourself. Excellent brand recognition. On the surface this looks like the opportunity of a life time.

Cons

Don't believe what you are told, ask your recruiter 1) how many agents/ financial consultants have made it past 5 years (most don't) 2) for proof of their income while an agent. Most in management are there because they can not sustain income as a Financial Services Representative. The business model at NYL is to capitalize on the new reps friends and families (low lying fruit) and once these relationships are expired (sold) they have no consistent way of sustaining your business or income.

Pros

1) Company invests significantly into insurance training for new agents 2) Strong brand 3) Tuition reimbursement for certain insurance-related courses

Cons

Disclaimer: Cons do not apply to all offices, as each branch has a different Managing Partner (I am only referring to the office in which I worked) 1) Sales support is significantly lacking. At times you feel as if the back-office is trying to prevent you from achieving your sales goals. 2) Management encourages new agents to share/split cases with veteran agents (significantly reducing the new agents income). Especially since some veteran agents don't do 50/50 splits (they want the new agent to be in the losing position, since they are "training you"). They also give veteran agents "hot leads", and give the new agents the "Antarctica leads". Both tactics are EXTREMELY discouraging. 3) Management tends to celebrate and joke about the amount of turnover that occurs, instead of trying to fix it.

Pros

Learned how to sell life insurance to anyone. Training in the first 6 months is very good.

Cons

I never made it to my Managing Partner's preferred club so my view on NY Life is negative. They can be very good old boys club. They clearly discriminate against minorities they don't like. Now looking back I am ashamed to be associated with them. I also worked under when Mr Pfaff was there. It appears his replacement has made things worse.
