Pros

I'm currently an intern for New York Life, my favorite part is how dedicated my managing partner is towards seeing me succeed. As an intern many of my tasks are similar to that of a standard financial services professional, but I don't exactly have to meet the strict monthly demands. The company as of right now appears to be offering me a great opportunity to get my foot into the industry and help me reach my long term goals. The managers are extremely helpful and the people are friendly, and I'm excited towards seeing how I will turn out with all of the current training.

Cons

It seems like a lot of the sales meetings are very repetitive and alot of the seminars give many new employees pie in the sky dreams. From the reviews I've seen on here, it seems that many people do not succeed within the insurance industry and follow other avenues of interest. Personally I'm not a fan of the commission based sales system for getting my weekly paychecks, but I'm really only using the job as a stepping stone towards a greater position. I find that it is pretty hard to establish yourself as a new agent, regardless of the level of training they give to you.

Pros

Unlimited opportunity to earn income... if you can get a stable of high net worth clients Flexible working hours for agents... except for weekly three hour org meetings for new agents, weekly three hour employee development meetings, monthly half day home office meetings... Great part-time job if you've got something else

Cons

commission-based income - you can feast or starve benefits contigent upon meeting sales quota training program for new agents concentrates on memorizing sales pitches, sales gimmicks, personal development and enticing you with possibility of unlimited income... little or no training in company products, services, or practices in life insurance industry

Pros

The company proved to be secure in the difficult times. It has laid back and friendly environment, with senior management being very approachable. Flat structure of the organization allows taking more responsibility. New York Life Investment Management provides excellent work / life balance for its employees. The compensation level is lower then at other companies in the same industry, but good benefits package partly compensates for it. I think it’s more beneficial to join New York Life Investment Management at a senior level versus entry level, since the company does not have a well developed process for promoting entry level analysts.

Cons

Lower salaries compared to industry Tiny yearly salary increases Hard to get promoted High level of bureaucracy, Too conservative
