Pros

I have been working for the National Safety Council for almost 5 years. In all of my career, I feel like I have found a place to call home. I feel like we put together a really great team, and my manager is probably the best manager I have ever worked for. For the first time, I truly have an equal balance of work and home life. The benefits package is great, as well as the 403b . There are a lot of great people and the mission is very important

Cons

Had to pull a few overnighters, but those are few and far between

Pros

NSC is like family (at least, that's what I experienced in my department). They also have a great mission: saving lives and helping to prevent accidents and safety hazards in the workplace.. Salary was equal to similar positions in this area. People were always professional, and there were a good deal of company freebies and fun outings. Very low turnover rate, so that's good or bad depending on your situation. There seems to be a lot of employee satisfaction, so that's good for you...but it can work against you if you're looking for a promotion, since most employees tend to stay at NSC for a long time. Great benefits. Blue Cross medical and Aetna dental, plus life insurance, flex spending, decent amount of PTO, etc. Pretty much as good as it gets. Many positions offer the option to work from home sometimes, so that's a huge plus (especially in winter). NSC has been around for over 100 years, so yeah...they aren't going to close down or go bankrupt anytime soon. Safety is a very stable industry that's still growing and expanding. Overall, it was a positive experience.

Cons

Minor things like having to set a positive example: no "walking and talking" on your cell phone on the property, things like that, but nothing too serious...nothing that detracted from your workday. They tend to hire more management than necessary, but that's good news if you're applying for a management role. They're a big company but their offices aren't the biggest, so job availability is pretty limited. Most people get hired on employee referrals, so your best bet is getting friendly with an employee and asking them for a referral. Their HR process is SLOOOOW. We're talking molasses in January slow. Don't count on getting a callback within a few days, or possibly even a few weeks. No major cons against working at NSC though. It was actually one of the best employers I've ever had.

Pros

They had a pond to walk around after work hours.

Cons

Massively corrupt organization that only exists to put money in the pockets of the people that run this place. I was fired and escorted out the door on my six month review after dozens of excellent performance reviews and after twenty years of dedicated service.
