Pros

There are lots of opportunities to pursue. If you get stuck in a rut and want to try something else, there are many different facets to explore all within the company. The local and regional leadership is generally easy to work with and often show interest in each employees well-being. The company is very proactive to a changing economy and benefits environment. Their quality control procedures are second to none. Peer review is part of the culture and as a result the quality of work that is produced is a lot higher than at other employers I've worked for in the past.

Cons

The company has been inappropriately staffed for most of my time at the company causing unnecessary burdens on employees which has frequently resulted in burnout and work that is not always up to par. For a benefits consulting firm, the company does not effectively take the advice of its top consultants. The retirement benefits are lousy compared to competitors. The vacation policies do not reward those who forgoe vacation time and choose to bill more hours and generate more revenue. Employee evaluations and promotions do not always seem to reflect an employee's performance for the entire year which is frustrating.

Pros

Flex time offered, clear career trajectory, although trajectory is not at all steep. Everyone has a similar career path at mercer. They count on education and training as the career milestones upon which promotion decisions are made. Outstanding effort and work product do not factor into promotions as heavily as training, certifications, degrees and exam passing.

Cons

Pay, morale are both on the low end of industry standards. Many smart, quantitative people ended up here believing that the consulting industry pay levels and career tracks would apply here. It was not the case. HR Consulting can not be compared with other consulting industries (like strategy or IT consulting) since the pay and career paths are much worse.
