Pros

Good company culture and values, you can learn exactly what sales are at Marshalls. Good starting for students and first job.

Cons

VERY POOL TRAINTINGS FOR NEW ASSOCIATES! The manager just tells you what you should do when you find someone wants to steal in the store at the first day, then you have to guess the next step. Low salary but overloaded work.

Pros

I loved my managers and coworkers. I loved the social aspect of customer service. I enjoyed supervising and managing, as I have a knack for organization.

Cons

Upper Management only cared about how many credit cards you got. Doesn't matter how efficient, productive, etc., you were, if you didn't get those credit cards, it doesn't matter. Upper management was out of touch with the realities of running a store. They would come up with new procedures and protocols, and harangue us to use them, but they accomplished nothing except allowing the people at corporate to pat themselves on the back. In other words, they would focus on arbitrary details, such as what words or phrases to use when greeting customers, but totally ignored/dragged their feet when it came to fixing broken registers/equipment. Screwed up priorities. But honestly, I'm sure corporate knows it's cheaper and easier to harass hourly employees and blame them for a poor net profit, then to address the issues that truly affect customer service/satisfaction (registers that freeze, elevators/escalators that are broken every other week, no employees on sales floor cleaning/recovering/assisting customers because there's no payroll). They're gas lighting their employees.

Bad management ruins everything

Pros

The policies are good, the store is nice to be in, and the scheduling is fairly flexible.

Cons

Management does not follow policy very well, especially when it comes to returns. They will frequently side against their employee who was following policy, and have even told us to never tell a customer "no" for any reason. The management is not open to criticism or questions, and then they reprimand employees for being confused about company policy or day-to-day activities. Promotion within the store does not happen in a timely or fair manner. Often it seems that the managers have picked out an employee to promote and then only interview others to give the impression of fairness. We are often left without a coordinator for excessive amounts of time, which results in a hastily given promotion and minimal training. They also have told employees they would promote them, only to give the promotion to another employee under a flimsy excuse. Training is hardly done and is not at all consistent. There seems to be no manual or guide for properly training employees, and the employees designated to train often do not know they will be training a new hire until that new hire shows up for work. There is no preparation or thought to how training will be done, which means that the new hire has spotty training and is often left not knowing how things should be done. The rate of pay hardly makes putting up with everything worth it. At my store it's minimum wage unless you're a coordinator of some sort, even with previous experience. To go from a part-time employee to a full-time one, the raise is only about $1, which is hardly worth it if you were only making minimum to begin with. I barely make enough to pay my bills, even with full-time hours. That should be more than enough, yet I still come up short a lot of the time.
