Pros

MIT is an exciting university where there is always a great deal of cutting-edge activity, in culture as well as technology. Employee benefits are excellent.

Cons

The IT organization has recently reorganized, with many excellent people leaving, laid off, or demoted over the past year. There is no longer a QA organization, and testing has become a part-time job.

Pros

Comfortable work environment for many people. Work-life balance is a plus. Vacation days, health insurance, and 401K are decent.

Cons

Very difficult to get your foot in the door. Compensation is not often competitive - even for strong applicants. Promotional process is not transparent and increase amounts are limited. Would be a difficult adjustment for strong candidates from private sector.
