Pros

Smart people, competitive pay, excellent benefits. A lot of opportunities for education and advancement. Plus MIT's prestige rubs off. When I tell people I work here, they are always impressed (and often ask me if I was a student here). If you get to work with students, you will be humbled by their brilliance and surprised by how down-to-earth they can be -- and how much guidance they often need.

Cons

MIT's excellence doesn't pervade through all levels. Some departments are much better run than others, which I suppose is to be expected. Decentralization and cumbersome bureaucracy create challenges as elsewhere in higher education. There's some abusive, entitled faculty to put up with, so make sure you get all the dirt you can before accepting a job.

Pros

Excellent research and learning environment, time there helps open many future doors of opportunity. Family friendly with subsidized child care on campus.

Cons

Postdocs are sub-employees since benefits are made VERY expensive and outright removed if you do the courtesy of bringing your own money in the form of a fellowship, health insurance rates are particularly punishing if you have dependents. No retirement savings, come on!

Pros

MIT has excellent benefits: great health insurance, cheap parking if you're into that sort of thing, and a crazy number of vacation days (20+federal holidays+vacation days). There's an extreme level of job security in a way that's basically unheard of these days. This is an excellent workplace for people who are capable of working super hard for 8 hours a day and then disconnecting and coming back tomorrow. This is a great place to work for people with families or for anyone with serious hobbies outside of work.

Cons

Salary is okay but not great, and raises are going to be about 3%/year no matter how well you do your job. As with all jobs, you sometimes feel like you have extra work to do, but the rewards for doing it are going to be pretty minimal: bonuses aren't a thing here. If you feel like your career is going nowhere, that's because it is; you're a cog in a large bureaucracy. If your co-workers seem like a bunch of burnouts, then the problem might just be that you have unrealistic expectations.
