Money culture

Pros

Since it is a well funded startup and a financial company, there is a pile of money to recruit the best tech talents from around the world. The office looks stylish and can WOW you for the first few months.

Cons

Not only finance business attracts certain types of people, but the lack of experience from management side made it a chaotic environment. HR regularly promotes the "ever changing and challenging" environment of Klarna is the direct result of its dynamic environment, but if you've worked there a couple of months you know it's just bad management. Klarna is not more famous than Google or Amazon. Do you think they are more chaotic? Burn out and back stabbing is unfortunately common. This was one of the worst companies I've ever worked for in Stockholm. But since they have money, they can afford to loose people and replace them with new ones who don't have a clue what they are getting into. Klarna doesn't have a good reputation in Swedish media and IT echosystem. Maybe that's why they so aggressively recruit from abroad. Nevertheless, I wish I knew about Glassdoor and read some reviews before accepting the offer.

Sexist sect

Pros

A fast moving company, free fruits and coffee, some employment benifits

Cons

Klarna is like a sect. Everything is about "what is best for Klarna". If you leave work after 8/9 hrs (eating lunch in front of your computer while working) your colleagues will glance with raised eyebrows, even though you can't expect any compensation for working overtime. Bullying can be expected for the one who refuses to conform to the norm or questions the wrong people. Colleagues are at one point encouraged to work as a team, and in another put against each other to create an insecure, scattered team that will be easier for the management to control. No real goals exist for the team or the team members, only vague instructions for each little assignment, making the project seem meaningless for the individual and creating a micromanaged work "process". A lot of the managers are very individualistic, and noting is done to change this. Instead it has more and more spilled over to their team members, closing the circle of an insecure atmosphere. There is almost more managers than people actually working and producing anything of value to the company. And then there is the whole thing of finding reasons for not needing people who don't "fit in", only to discover a few months later that their position was in fact needed(!) Perhaps this is a creative strategy of keeping the salaries low. If you fire someone before they have the chance to ask for a raise, you can keep the salaries on the modest level only people looking for a job would accept. Salary discussions only take place during a specific period every year, which the employee has to find our for themselves and initiate. If you for some reason happen to miss the period that Klarna has decided that salary discussions should be held (for example you weren't aware of them), you have to wait until next year. Male employees are in an almost absurd way much more encouraged and allowed to take place in decision making processes, than women. Female employees are also not getting access to important information, making it harder for them to do their job.

Really bad culture

Pros

This is a company where you have the chance to learn a lot if you are at the right department...

Cons

The culture is really bad!!! If you questioning anything you will get fired meaning that managers are so afraid of sharing feedback to their managers. Employees are doing anything to show off which means that for exemple stealing other colleagues business case, presentations etc and put their own name on it isn't uncommon. Other companies believe in there employees but at Klarna all employees are just players which are not allowed to make any decisions. All decisions are taken by top mgmt and the burn out rate is huge. There is no chance for internal career. They rather recruit someone external than promoting internally. They tend to loose all experienced and talented employees since they realize that there is no future in this company. You can't invest your time and energy in a company if the culture is bad and no one is thankful. Because you won't hear any positive feedback at Klarna. The only time you get feedback is if you've done anything wrong. Sine the most important thing is to find and claim a "guilty person" aka blame game instead of focusing on how to avoid doing the same mistake again.
