Pros

Working towards a bonus is very motivating. Being a 'Partner' brings a great value to the job, and equality among Partners (apart from managers)

Cons

You have to manage your own training. The policies within John Lewis e.g. 'Happy Returns' make to power of Partners very weak, which is not what The Partnership should be about. It makes it difficult for Partners to actually have control of their business as they should- according to the policies!

Pros

Fabulous company ethos Great benefits Beautiful and inspiring product to work with Lots of respect and trust with suppliers Really good democracy- managers really want to listen to opinion Decent company values.

Cons

Very low staff turnover (could be seen as a good thing!) so promotion prospects minimal- especially if you start at the bottom. IT systems are cumbersome and frustrating- buying processes can take forever. No consistency in career progression across head office- it depends who your line manager and head of is. There aren't any official levels to achieve so it is completely down to your line manager whether you progress, and if you don't get on with them it's pretty much impossible. Not enough encouragement to take ownership- this is getting worse as the company gets bigger Internal transfers to another dept (still in same job) aren't consistently encouraged so you can become 'stuck' in your area without going for another formal interview. Very frustrating because I love what the company stands for, and the product, but career progression is so difficult I might have to go elsewhere. Very sad!
