Working alongside my favourite author

Pros

I never imagined I would get to work with my favourite author. He is now one of the people who helps create the courses at the IDF. It’s a pleasure to have him and other intelligent and dynamic people as my colleagues. Yay!

Cons

Having had a previous position at large company, it was very difficult for me to get used to being entrusted with so much responsibility. On one hand it was reassuring to know that management had such faith in my abilities. On the other hand I was freaking out. I got used to it, but it was a couple of difficult months.

Thanks for your honest review. Responsibility tends to be a double edged sword. It can motivate and invigorate, but it can also burden and dishearten. I am glad to see that you have made a successful transition from the latter to the former. In our experience, this journey, while challenging, is worth it as it has a positive impact on your career, but also makes people more happy and fulfilled in their other endeavours and personal lives.

Becoming effective

Pros

Our company provides some of the best UX design courses in the world. And since I am in love with UX design, I’m also in love with my work :-) The whole organization is built around the goal of raising the quality of design education. I am happy to say that this philosophy also applies to the people working there. In my 4 years of working here, I feel that I have grown both professionally and personally. We put a lot of effort into productivity-increasing methods/initiatives/work processes/etc. I have noticed how this has influenced me on a personal level. I get things done much faster in my personal life. The ability to block out irrelevant things and interruptions from my life means that I now have much more time to spend with my husband and kids.

Cons

It was very difficult for me to get used to the fact that I had to work from home while hearing my kids play just outside my office door, without me being able to join them. So I decided to start working from a shared office space and that works much better for me.

I appreciate your review since you raise one of the subjects we are passionate about… productivity. When someone is productive and in flow, their endorphins will give a wonderful feeling of clarity, confidence, and competence. Productivity is the opposite of stress. Productivity is about being in flow - and loving it :-)

Different, in the good sense of the word

Pros

Having been used to work in the corporate world for the better part of my previous career, this job was different from the very beginning. It took some getting use to from my part since everyone was doing remote work and all the communication with colleagues happened online. It turned out wonderfully and I will never be able to have an office-based job again :-) The team has been doing remote work for decades and have made successful remote work into a hallmark of theirs. I loved the freedom and responsibility, which are two sides of the same coin (management repeats that point often). Another thing I would like to mention is the quality of people working there. I really enjoyed that my colleagues were extremely well educated and that they both had ambitions for their own personal growth and on behalf of the company.

Cons

I wish that there more opportunities for the team to meet in real life. There are usually two or three meetups every year and they give me chance to get to know my colleagues better. I had hoped that there would be more of these physical meetings but they are of course very costly for the company.

We appreciate your candor since it helps us become a better company to work for. Your remarks on doing remote work tend to resonate with most of the people at the IxDF. It is a difficult process to get used to since it involves lots of self-discipline but once you get used to it, there is really no getting back to the regular corporate world :-)
