Pros

There is no shortage of opportunities to learn and grow as a person while contributing to a cause worthy of the world. As an engineer, this job is very fulfilling. You'll be surrounded by a lot of incredibly smart minds and friendly faces.

Cons

In the past few months, there have been layoffs that have all but destroyed the culture. It turned what used to feel like a group of people working on a collective mission into a bunch of factions trying to compete for manager approval and the limelight. Like all technology companies, they try to hide questionable labor practices in a veneer of *mission* and *impact*. You will be asked to work more and more overtime (or work every weekend) and will likely not be compensated for it as overtime.

Pros

Cool mission that can have a real impact

Cons

Company spin machine is very effective at putting out cool articles and news headlines, but the ground reality and mood among employees are a far cry as evidenced by the poor reviews here. Icon has been bleeding cash and laid off more than a quarter of the workforce in Jan 2023. Additionally, a large chunk of employees decided to take voluntary severance because of the poor morale and lack of direction which is pervasive. Leadership is inexperienced and constantly keep changing targets and direction. For most directors and VPs, this is their first leadership position and this inexperience shows up in dysfunctional organizations and lack of clear direction to their teams. Senior leadership is more interested in managing optics and putting out PR articles in the press instead of focusing inward on running the company.

Pros

Cool technology for a ‘good’ cause.

Cons

Cowboy pre-madonna’s who stress more about social media brownie points than making things happen. They have difficulty staying on task.
