Pros

I took this job to travel, get playing experience, and pay off my student loans. Room and board is covered, and the performance schedule allowed me to get off the ship and explore the ports almost every day. I really enjoyed the itineraries and got to meet many wonderful people from all over the world. Lots of big personalities and fun people in the entertainment department. Overall, it was a great gig out of school.

Cons

It's a corporate environment. Everything comes down to ratings. This is understandable, but it limited our capacities within our roles. The trio I played in was not encouraged to play anything outside of a somewhat limited repertoire with a heavy dose of rhumbas, cha-chas, waltzes, etc. Band morale suffered while playing 5 sets a night for several months in this environment. But that is the gig. You put up with it to enjoy the lifestyle and travel.

Cruise Ship Musician (Bassist)

Pros

There were many great aspects of working on the ship as a musician. I did the Alaskan season, an 18 day to Hawaii contract and two weeks in Mexico jazz charters. The EM'a were very reasonable and there was good communication to the bands. The ports were stellar and the food was AMAZING on the Lido deck! I met a lot of guests on the ship who were just great people. Fellow musicians and crew members were all very easy to get along with.

Cons

The only thing I would caution any musician about would be the length of time pertaining to their contract. Mine turned into 6 months. This was too long for me to be on a ship. 3-4 months is an average length of time. Had I kept it to the original 3.5 months, I probably would have enjoyed my time more...the last couple of months on the ship were "trying" at best.
