Toxic, fearful culture

Pros

Great colleagues, interesting work, opportunities to make an impact.

Cons

The culture for salaried office workers at GM has shifted since the new "Chief People Officer" came on board. Gone are the days of transparent communication. I have literally been in an all people meeting and heard "no layoffs" only to hear the very next day of layoffs. The culture is now toxic and fearful. The new "performance based" workforce means five percent of workers will be put into an underperforming category no matter what and will likely lose their jobs at that time. A manager leading a high-performing team will be forced to still rate five percent of her employees this way, regardless of their actual performance. This is creating a culture where employees are in competition with each other, lest they be part of the five percent. And that totally negates the "One Team" behavior that GM has encouraged for many years. Our Workplace of Choice surveys are so bad, they don't even report the results anymore. I have been a proud GM employee for many years and invested my salary in our products regularly, but I fear the future here is bleak. They have replaced many salaried office workers with staff from the Philippines, all while experiencing record profits and spending billions on stock buybacks. Corporate greed at its worst.

Pros

Jobs security, 401k plan, paid holidays, WFH flexibility (depends on team)

Cons

Management is all talk, no action and they all have their own agenda; no proper project management or realistic scoping with business; the status quo is slightly below mediocrity, so if you are smart and take pride in doing a good job you will be expected to do your work and other people's; don't expect a raise, promotion, or the ability to switch teams.

Pros

some very minor remote flexibility I guess?

Cons

- Anti-consumer decision making - Zero talent retention - Deceptive leadership practices, they go against their word constantly. - LAYOFFS HAPPEN ALL THE TIME IN DIRECT OPPOSITION TO THE WORD OF THE SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM, it's often not even shared internally so is a surprise to everyone. - Nepotistic promotion systems (who you know not what you know) - Zero recognition for going above and beyond role expectations - Constant downsizing so expect the workload of at least 3 people to be thrown at you at all times. They call it "doing more with less" - Constant shift in senior leadership drives constantly changing course resulting in no meaningful progress in anything as it's a revolving door of "next smartest man in the room" - Young people new to the workforce beware, you will be expected to hit the ground running with little to no direction in a fast paced chaotic space. They will tell you to not be afraid of failure and turn around to punish you for failure (see next point) - HR policy that every team MUST have 5%-15% of its members listed as "does not meet role requirements" which results in loss of bonus, anti-team mentality (which they love peddling "One Team!"), and possible termination based on an arbitrary goal post and loss of highly talented individuals on a high impact all-star team.
