Pros

The health insurance is good, 401k match is average. Working from home is easy and effective. The company will provide training for certain certifications. Your experience at this company will depend on the program you are working on. If you are on a well-run program it has the potential to be great. If your program is not managed by competent people, you will probably hate it.

Cons

Coming to this company was a huge culture shock for me. My program employs some of the laziest people I have ever encountered in my career. You have to hound the support staff just to add a drive or adjust permissions. Our main developer is a contractor and puts forth the least amount of effort possible. Once he puts in his hours for the week he is done whether the app works or not. He frequently makes promises he can't keep and constantly misses deadlines. Our managers are clueless about day to day operations and are also lazy - it starts at the top. Staff are largely indifferent to what is going on unless they are affected. The funny thing is this is supposed to be one of the better programs and the government has a good opinion of us - if only they knew what a disaster it is behind the scenes. There are a few people doing the majority of the work, the rest do whatever they want. Negotiate a high starting salary as pay raises are small. It seems to be difficult to get another job within the company, like they would rather hire an outsider instead of having to replace someone who is already working on a contract. The service desk is terrible. If you have a problem with your computer, good luck getting help. If a deadline is approaching, the fastest solution is to re-image it. Profit margins are tight so there will be no money for upgrades and you will have to make due with whatever resources are available. If there is a problem with the app, everyone will try to shift blame to someone else.

Pros

Telework policies were strong before the pandemic, so the infrastructure was strong enough to handle the added burden of the pandemic. Internal training resources and opportunities are increasingly beneficial. I can see that they’re listening to their employees to try and make the work/life balance better.

Cons

While not a bad company to work for, they are a very large corporation, and that allows for them to forget about their biggest resource - the people who do the work on their contracts that make them money. A lot of money and effort is being put into personnel programs, but I’m unsure how beneficial they truly are to the employees. The pay can be mediocre and less competitive depending upon if the program was bid properly. It seems like they’ve inherited a lot of underbid programs, which makes their employees overworked and underpaid.
