Forever 21 - HQ

Pros

Their name. The only real reason to work at Forever 21 is for resume experience. They are quickly becoming one of the top retailers from an outside perspective, despite their internal workings. There are a lot of good people working there too, even though many are unhappy.

Cons

Pay is miserable across all departments that I know of, and they will pressure you hard to overwork. Some people see as little as 3-4 days off per year and are expected to work off hours constantly under tightly monitored conditions. Cameras are everywhere and HR & IT watch everything that you do. Security will search your purse as you leave. They offer the minimum legal days off and use PTO, so your sick days are taken from the same pool as your vacation days which you don't get much of anyway. I am Korean American (it's a Korean owned company and most at HQ apart from designers are Korean as well). There are literally almost no managers in the company who aren't Korean and the Manager level meetings are held in Korean, so good luck making it to the top if you aren't. I can't say that this company represents my heritage well. I was asked to give my employees next to nothing in raises (even though they are severely underpaid compared to other similar industries) and to tell them that it was because our company was not profitable. This is despite the fact that we have been experiencing record growth and I know this based on expansion plans. I've been there for a little over a year and I am considered an old timer now. Almost everyone that I know, even at the higher levels apart from senior management, is looking for a new job. Other senior managers are brutal and I have heard of them taking legal action several times against their own employees. Typical manager attitude at the main office is to motivate with fear and warnings versus praise. I've seen more than one manager bring some of the other girls to tears.

Pros

Starbucks, A few decent co-workers, Young population,

Cons

ILLEGALLY tracks salary employee hours by tracking badges Hiring salary instead of hourly so they don't have to pay overtime 9-10 hour work day is normal, don't expect to work 8 and get away with it Executives are old school they say harmful, discriminatory things like it's normal It smells like chemicals in Buying All the smart, qualified people left fast Most departments are filled with unhappy, inexperienced, or dumb people College degree not required to be in a management position Sucking up and complimenting managers/directors will get you far If you get an Exceeds Expectations review, some will get paid at a Meets Expectation bonus due to "cost savings" HIPPO values are a joke: Mr. Chang threw a fit when he saw that people were waiting in the Starbucks line for 10 minutes instead of working You are a $ sign, not a person

Pros

1) Gets you experience 2) New building but surrounding area is still ghetto 3) Makes you a stronger person to experience how bad a company can be. Makes me really appreciate my new job someplace else.

Cons

• Unprofessional & Unorganized – several “managers” are not qualified to lead. They are placed into those positions for other reasons. Certifications & degrees don’t mean much as you have MBAs, CPAs, IT certs, etc that are not making as much as those that have the right connections in the company. While you can have an enjoyable experience, the average employee has encountered all too often these degrading managers. The workload doesn’t make sense when you can be making either the same salary or higher at another job doing much less. • Constant Turnover & Unhappy Employees – due to the aforementioned above, the of disarray of knowledge runs across all departments. The loss of knowledge due to long experienced employees leaving creates more chaos. In general, many employees are unhappy as there is no leadership and lack of appreciation shown for work accomplished. There are actually some very talented employees that have done A LOT to help the company keep afloat even with the limited resources. Important employees are let go without a reasonable attempt to retain them. This obviously shows the lack of appreciation or the company knows they are unable to compete with outside salaries so they try to save face by not making a retarded counter offer. It is widely known by recruiters and other companies that employees here are underpaid (as mentioned before, some are taken care of, but the majority in mid-level and lower positions are well below). Employees that have toughed it out a few years here should be able to do well in other companies and those that have left, are usually much happier and enjoy a better quality of life. Those that are stuck, don’t be afraid, explore what your options are and give yourself a chance to see what other companies can offer. • Constantly Changing –I have experienced horrible times and thankfully with all the turnover, several (not all) of those that made entire departments horrible have left. However, ultimately, the mood of the company remains the same as not much has changed in how employees are perceived over the past 10 years. Don’t expect to make changes, especially if you are unhappy with upper management. You learn to either deal with it or move on. Complaining and trying to make a change only hurts yourself, don’t think HR will protect you as they are not in control (although all the retarded company memos that are sent out will lead you to believe there is a sense of employee care). Only if you are willing to take it all the way, meaning, retain a lawyer, call osha, and really want to take this unethical behavior to court, your are better off finding a way to manage or leave. In the end, its not worth it, as there are much better options out there. The company may fail on its own with these constant struggles. Main focus is sales sales sales and open 50 million stores everywhere with no regard for the infrastructure. Systems within the company are a mess, same data does not match across different programs, processes are too manual. Purchasing/replacing software will not fix these problems as the same problems will reoccur because no one is evaluating the process of how things are done. While there is constant turnover, most recently, a number of higher ranking individuals left/will be leaving. Although, this happens all too often, it should remind you that this is not a stable company to be in for the long haul. Get your experience and use it to find something better. Again, those that feel stuck, you will be much worse off when all the chaos finally catches up and you are scrambling to find a job, start looking, be prepared & evaluate your options. Back to the horrible times, there are still managers there that degrade and belittle employees like they are in elementary school. These control freaks are way out of touch with employees. Don’t expect this behavior to change. They give their lives to the company, working long hours away from family (if you can even call the life at home they have a true family), and for what? Just think about it, employees have left because they DO NOT want to move up in the company because it is just not worth it. • Final Words - I never felt proud to work here. When you find out about all the contradictions of mgmt, it just amazed me. Especially the religious front they put on, god this god that but yet the dirty things they do to people. The is definitely not a company you want to do business with unless you are financially prepared to protect yourself. Very unprofessional to say the least. Again, you can very well have an enjoyable experience and do well here (depending on who you work with) but for the majority, this is NOT the case.
