Pros

EF has an excellent trove of teaching material. They furnish teachers with both primary and supplementary material that work well with several teaching techniques such as the CELTA. Additionally, they have an excellent online learning platform called English Town that is highly engaging and works well with their printed material. Overall, EF has a robust bank of pedagogical resources that takes the guesswork out of lesson planning.

Cons

Contributing to their significant profit margin, EF has engaged in a policy of paying their teachers extremely low wages. In my area, they are among the lowest wage employers despite having the largest overall sales numbers. Additionally, mid-level administration (not-including executive officers but rather branch managers) are not really concerned with establishing a positive social culture. Political infighting among administrators, vying for advancement, creates issues for employees (mainly faculty) that mostly are just interested in teaching but must always be careful about where they plant their flag. The result is a highly political environment that make job-security an issue. Faculty is regularly reminded in ways both subtle and overt that they are replaceable. Overall morale is, therefore, quite low.

Pros

Great Online Platform for English Live Students are attentive and great Lessons are generally easy to figure out It's a job and great for this time

Cons

They pay $12/hour for adults. They don't offer any incentives, unless you're a bilingual teacher. After 6 months, you can get a raise under their discretion. For English Live kids, teachers can make $18-$20 an hour, after incentives. Some of the lessons can be very boring Group Lessons and Private Lessons, you get paid the same amount, despite there being more students in a group lesson Very inconsistent scheduling

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on the platform. We are glad to hear that this home-based role has been a good match for your current work needs, but also understand that you are looking for opportunities to increase your earnings. Though KIDs’ programs may offer higher fees in some instances, our adults program does offer teachers the ability to work 24/7 and have much more scheduling flexibility week to week. As it sounds like you may be working in our US-based center, we do want to assure you as well that teachers have the opportunity to negotiate changes in their base and supplemental fees if both parties decide to renew the contract, which normally takes place at six month intervals. Please feel free to reach out to your center support team if you’d like to discuss your qualifications and future fees. We also understand that some of our students’ custom requests may be outside our teachers’ standard areas of expertise. Should you wish, our team is also happy to point you in the direction of useful resources to help you prepare for such lessons efficiently. In addition, we do offer webinars (and have a library of webinar recordings) in which teachers share their best practices on how to more easily create custom content. We’re also happy to provide further information on peak student demand times, so that you can try to build out a more consistent schedule going forward. Thank you again for sharing your feedback with us. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to your center staff to further discuss these matters or any other questions you may have.

Thank you for your review. We're glad we were able to provide you the opportunity to come teach in China and explore what the country has to offer. Work hours are disclosed in the extended contract, which is provided to teachers in advance for review before needing to sign. Additional compensation is also provided to teachers during summer and winter course, to compensate for the additional hours worked. The safety of our staff and students is our top priority and take an alleged complaint of child abuse very seriously. The child abuse incident should be escalated immediately to compliance.china@ef.com in order for an investigation to take place. If you wish to discuss the work environment in more detail, please reach out to teacher.welfare@ef.com and we'll be able to assist.
