Pros

- Great location in Zürich - Free access to the gym

Cons

My overall experience at EF Zürich was extremely bad. I wouldn't advise anyone to work here. I moved to Zürich for this job in January, left everything behind in my home country and got fired on the last day of my probation period because of the COVID crisis. I was literally thrown out on the street within a week and not entitled to any unemployment benefits. EF couldn't care less and didn't offer any help for the next steps I had to take. I completely understand the company had to make some hard decisions because of the COVID situation, but the way they did it was absolutely unacceptable and disrespectful to their employees. Being fired in a 10 minute phone call without any compassion is not in line with their so-called attention for employee happiness. Apart from that, managers have no clue of how to train new employees and feeling completely lost the first months apparently is a rule rather than an exception. The salary is ridiculously low compared to similar jobs in Switzerland. Supermarket employees even earn more money than many EF employees. So, to be honest I have nothing good to say about this company. I expected a lot, because the hiring procedure was very pleasant and made me enthusiast about the new challenge. This made my disappointment even bigger after getting to know the "real" company.

Pros

Random events and celebrations Building is pretty and modern Cafe has amazing food options Salary is not bad if you aren't entry level

Cons

From my first day at EF, I felt like I was at college freshman orientation. You are strongly encouraged to socialize at their bar downstairs after work or participate in activities like the EF games. If you are someone who wants to come to work, do your work and then go home and live your own life, this is not the place for you. I think that EF manages to succeed because they promote the "lifers" - people who have never worked anywhere else and don't question any of the processes (or lack thereof - they like to say this is because they are young and fun and not corporate). They aren't retaining new external talent because their current management is not receptive to any changes. In fact, they don't even care enough to give you an exit interview. Instead, they focus on surface level things to make their entry level workers believe that they are a cool, modern place to work and hope that some of them turn into lifers who know nothing about how an organization should run, because they have only ever worked at EF. Additionally, for a modern company who prides themselves on being global, their resistance to WFH and their terrible maternity leave policies are frankly embarrassing.

Pros

If you're right out of college, or are looking to learn some really great sales skills this is the job for you. You're surrounded by like-minded, young, fun people who are eager to learn and perform. You'll get at least 1 free trip a year, and that can get up to 4-6 trips a year depending on tenure and sales performance. EF knows how to throw a hell of a party, that's for sure! Everyone is super friendly and eager to help - I met some great friends through this job and traveled to so many places I wouldn't have normally had the chance to go.

Cons

After about 2-3 years, the excitement wears off. The free travel is wonderful, but if you have a family or are serious about career growth, that becomes less of a sticking-point. There is extremely little room to grow, get promoted, and make more money. I worked at EF for almost 4 years, consistently hit sales goals, brought in over $1 million revenue y/y, and never made more than $60k/yr. Do not take this job if you're used to working commission-based sales, or at least be very aware of what your salary will be. Whatever they tell you you can expect in bonus, half it and that's more likely. Goals will never be less than 10% up y/y, even if you have a giant book of business. That means, the longer you stay and the better you do, the harder it is for you to make money. They also never let managers, or EF-lifer's, go (barring economic distress like covid). Managers are often shuffled around from office to office, department to department, even though they really don't contribute any longer, or are down-right terrible at their jobs and impact the company morale. If you can survive 7-10 years you're practically untouchable. If you're considering EF, and you're used to a typical Sales salary - look the other way. Or at the very least be prepared to take a large pay-cut. If you're recently out of college, looking to learn a lot, have a ton of fun, meet lots of interesting people, and make just enough to be $100 away from living paycheck to paycheck, this is the place for you!

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We will reflect seriously on the themes you shared. To clarify a few points: The Tour Consultant position is a sales role where your bonus is dependent on your sales growth and the growth potential of your market. A successful sales person who is able to maximize their market potential is capable of significant earnings year after year. In addition, the EF Denver office is primarily a sales and customer support office. For individuals with proven success who are looking for growth outside of sales and customer support, there are many opportunities throughout the EF worldwide network. We have recently seen Tour Consultants take on new roles in Boston, Zurich, Shanghai and Sydney. If you are committed to staying in Denver, sales is the most common career path. We agree that the EF culture is a strong plus – the people, the travel and the ability to learn in a sales organization are just a few of the reasons we hear of why people choose a lasting career with EF. We are sorry that EF was not a long-term professional fit for you and wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
