Pros

Working at Dexcom gave me valuable perspective on just how bad a company can be and for that I appreciate my current job even more. I think it is inevitable that every job will involve some BS here and there but Dexcom really sets the bar astonishingly high (or low...?). Whenever I run into something annoying at my current job it really grounds me to take a second to remember: "Hey, at least it's not Dexcom-bad." There is a handful of really wonderful humans who work at Dexcom who I was happy to meet and spend time with while at work.

Cons

Technical leadership lacks the technical background and experience necessary to adequately direct research, new technology development or to solve problems that inevitably pop up when changes are made to the existing product. This is especially problematic because technical leadership insists on a very top-down, autocratic management style despite hiring (for the most part) very talented and capable PhD level engineers and scientist. The result is a pseudo-intellectual, bully culture where experimental evidence is only relevant if it makes (middle-)management look good. While I was at Dexcom it wasn't uncommon to see people with PhD's blatantly manipulate or misrepresent data to please (or avoid the wrath of?) their vindictive supervisor. I also saw people present thorough, honest data that refuted the leadership's latest hair-brained hypothesis and where then transferred to a different project or quietly uninvited from the weekly project meeting. None of this should really comes as a surprise though, when you consider that none of the founding scientists or engineers are still at the company and that the current CTO (who holds only a bachelors degree in electrical engineering) just happens to be married to the former CEO's daughter. And it's all unqualified legacy employees from there on down. It's almost impressive how bad working at Dexcom is. Unless you're some kind of glutton for punishment I'd seriously consider looking somewhere else. Or don't believe me and you can experience it for yourself.

Pros

Good work life balance. As an engineer can duck below 40 hours of work a week or work remote majority of time if you want. Good IT spending on software and equipment. Good funding for engineering test equipment if you can make a case for the need. The chaos of Dexcom lends itself to good job security!

Cons

Very chaotic. Many projects are driven by project managers who are simply marching to deadlines. Process steps are designed without critical specifications or in many cases even proper documentation because again: deadlines. One can raise concerns but these are brushed off if timelines do not line up. Very frequently the rushed project will come screaming back needing to be redone with proper documentation/specs/operating window however at an even more frantic pace. So many times projects that could have been done properly if given time, but take three times as long and four times the effort due to rushing & corner cutting. It is very to enter the office and find that everything is "on fire". Get prepared for 30-40 people zoom calls, where most participants are idea generators and only 2-3 "do'ers". Many many hand offs and many groups operating independently lead to a very chaotic and stressful work environment. Dexcom is not a good environment for new engineers to learn how to become a successful engineer.

Pros

Fairly reliable work experience. Day In and day out does not vary much. This would be an excellent job for entry level employees to learn how not to do things professionally.

Cons

Never worked for a company with so little regard to the daily burden the company places on the employee. From non existent to horrible parking arrangements from slim to none parking options, to so crammed in you will sustain vehicle damage. To a draconian it department that has no thought to the amount of work that cannot be accomplished due to their policies and procedures. HR tries to sell itself as employee friendly but comes out at the bottom of mediocre as best. Executive management has great ideas and leadership that is completely watered down by incompetent at best, to political sabotage by a middle management layer looking to cash out their stock options. They have no career path for anyone, there is no mentoring, or help in learning how middle management wants things done until one day even with all the positive annual reviews and raises they will discard you as an employee during the annual November layoffs. I’ve personally seen middle management engage in illegal and ill advised harassment of all stripes to be backed by an incompetent HR department. Many of these management offenders are known and HR policies keep them employed while removing any employees that say anything. They continue to struggle with employee churn because of these known issues. It’s not uncommon for employees to only be there for a year or two until they leave for better jobs, or they are forced out by internal politics.
