Pros

St Louis is a place with slower pace and there is not much pressure at work as a scientist. I work on making active drug ingredients that sell to big pharmaceutical companies. This makes me proud of my work because I am really helping people who are suffering. My managers were scientists themselves so they are supportive of my work to an extent. Salary and benefits are good for the living cost is low in this area. There are other social benefits since this company has been around this area for so long, such as subsidiary of zoo and botanic garden memberships.

Cons

Since this company has been around for very long and being sold many times, it is kind of like a step child mentality. The leadership is not strong enough to stand for their own vision as where things should go. Since paces are slow, there are bureaucracy everywhere. Work can be performed much more efficient if a few old dogs want to learn some new tricks, however, they are too comfortable where they are. The city center where the major part was located is not a good place. Research and development department was put there which is more difficult to attract talents.

Pros

Its a giant, international company with a lot of job opportunities, if you have the right manager who is willing to invest in your future. The company itself is growing, and is spread around across the country and around the world. In addition, its an exciting company in that products are always being released and upgraded. In addition, you are in an industry where you are helping people, which is something you can't say in a lot of industries out there. The industry is also fairly recession-proof, since people are always getting sick, independent of the economy, which is a plus right now.

Cons

Management isn't on the same page, and each facility is run independently, making it a series of fiefdoms that don't act the same way. The company's culture is extremely aggressive, so a lot of the time it is 'eat or be eaten.' There is not loyalty to your subordinates, coworkers, or anyone, really. To move up in the company someone up there has to like you, and then you just grab their coattails as they move up as well. Not to mention, at any time, they may decide you product line isn't profitable and ship it to China. They have an entire department dedicated to closing plants. That's not a comfortable feeling.

Pros

Covidien is trying to establish itself as one of the biggest players in the medical device industry. Having split off from Tyco in 2007, there is certainly much room at Covidien to shape what the comapny does, how it company performs and where it will go. In many ways entrepreneurial, in even moore ways messed up in terms of work efficiency, decision making and general leadership.

Cons

Too many new people being hired into the company to lead the company's internal transformation and business direction. High turnover due to random hiring/firing/promotion/demotion. High frustration level with inefficiencies of internal communication and approval processes. Beware of promises during the hiring process - except for pay, what you're promised often isn't what you get.
