Covidien is well positioned for 2009 and beyond

Pros

They high margin medical device manufacturer that is to two suppliers to hospitals. There is a large range of products made both in USA and off Shore. If you goal is to move your career to another country, Covidien has a variety of career options in this area. The company seems to take good care of employees, i.e. benefits and office setups. If you work in the home office in Mansfield, there is a lot a time taken to employee training and re-training.

Cons

Very siloed in the different business units.

Pros

They are on the ground floor & moving. It is always a good time to be at a company when they are recovering since the only direction to go is up. They have tried some new innovation and new horizions, however, too many of these attempts have either missed the mark or taken 2 or 3 tries to get right, yet no one has been held accountable-- but they have been promoted.

Cons

Immediate manager was good, however, there are too many middle managers who lack education, professionalism and industry knoweldge yet are in their position because they have been around and "go back" with the other hiring managers. Nepotism and cohortism is rampant. Pay is low for the industry, benefits are good. Stock gifts are nonexistant for all but the highest management. Sr. Management does a poor job in acknolwedging a good effort, only criticism is offerred. There have been too many new hires with over inflated titles who just don't get it or have fallen flat. True job growth opportunities are few and far between, you can move incrimentally within your role, but advancing from worker to management is rare in all but the highest turnover positions.

Pros

They have not followed most of the rest of industry in having layoffs; employment seems to be stable. If you hire in from outside they will give you decent pay and an appropriate level, but once you are inside they do not compensate to market.

Cons

Managers are marginally competent, so promotions and raises are given to favorites. The company is obsessed with benchmarking and metrics, so much time that could be spent productively is used to write reports and update spreadsheets on daily performance.
