Pros

In business since 1818, built by generations of loyal and motivated employees. Many have given their entire career and countless personal hours. Previous respectful and motivating leadership. A handful of them are left. Benefits are good. Clean work environment and fleet. Compensation is good. A few remaining Old Timers are highly experienced in the industry. Interesting technology evolution and learning opportunity. UTC (parent company) is ethical. Mostly great people at the branch level. Once the envy of competitors in terms of who to work for and where to learn the business.

Cons

Over the last 2 years the company has been run by leadership incompetence. Egos that are greater than life, bullying on many levels, countless loyal long term and hard working employees have lost their jobs. Highly political. Advancement is reserved for those that are in the management "boys & girls club". Most new management now come from virtually any non-technical company. No more advancement opportunity to start at the ground level. So called born leaders at Chubb Edwards come from Courier Companies, Photo Copier, Business Machine, Stationary Retailers or Elevator industry. They are instant industry experts and leaders by ego, bullying and by degrees to their names. Will Chubb Edwards become the Nortel of the Security Industry ? For now, competitors are gobbling up all the experienced industry icons and taking away sales. The only one's loving the current state are those same competitors. Hopefully UTC will wake up and see what's happening before it is too late. Todd Myers is no longer the CEO or President. Things would be different if he still was. The leader since these changes occurred is Tracy Cordes.

Not a Place to Build a Technical Career

Pros

I was paid well. Benefits are very good. The on-site fitness center in Syracuse was a great benefit. Insurance costs were reasonable. The employee scholar program is second to none. My direct supervisor was a very strong leader, and a very good manager. She shielded us from a lot of the BS and politics.

Cons

The local group I worked with had good people. The company, as a whole, is thoroughly dominated by bean-counters and bureaucrats, including technical decisions. The overall culture of the company is one of finger-pointing and back-biting. Unless a person has a very strong sense of purpose, this place can drive out any sense of ambition and/or technical curiosity The company ran some very strong technical leadership out a few years ago, and this is where they lost me. It was obvious to me that this was a company that wasn't interested in building up effective teams of people. It was obvious to me the nobody had any interest in anything I had to say. I did not feel empowered to do anything on my own.

Some Good, A lot not good

Pros

This company has some benefits that are really built well; the best to recommend is their Scholar Program. If you are employed, I recommend take advantage of it.

Cons

Constant leadership restructuring is leaving employees uncertain about the future. Pay increases are completely merit-based, and has never increased enough to cover even costs of living. It has continued to get more expensive to work. Health care coverage is a JOKE, and company management does not seem to respond to any of this in it's employee surveys. I would leave, but to lose my tenure and to find a job that can at least cover my current salary is not possible. Employee morale is down.
