Pros

Flexible hours, College reimbursement program for both part time and full time. Great place to work if you are a college student and need a flexible schedule. For a part time job, you also have the potential of making more money then you would at most other part time retail jobs. Also one of if not the only car sales position where you can work part time. Most traditional car dealerships require you to work full time (based off of personnel experience).

Cons

Commissioned based job with no base salary. If you do end making less than minimum wage CarMax will pay you at least the minimum wage which, you have to pay them back on your next check. So they really only loan you minimum wage if you don't produce any sales(better than not making any money though, like is the case at some other commission based jobs). CarMax runs off a flat rate commission pay system that can be less than in traditional sales. The way the company justifies this, is by saying that CarMax produces higher foot traffic than traditional dealerships. So you end up selling double the cars than a traditional sales person but you end up making the same or less than traditional sales. A sales consultant at CarMax is has more responsibilities than a traditional sales person. Here a sales is responsible for the entire transaction from start to finish (including doing the financing). So double the work for half the pay. Also because CarMax has the no hassle policy and encourages people to come in and browse we also end up with a higher volume of less serious shoppers, which usually leads to you working with somebody for an entire day or a few days for no money at all.

Pros

Wearing shorts to work is great. “The Culture” is promoted to ta great extent and has been rated “best” to work at 14 yrs in a row. Discounts on vehicles 3 times a year. Most employees are different outside of work because there isn’t the looming manager just dying to look good for hauling in an associate for saying something off the cuff.

Cons

I wish I had read more of the “buyer” reviews before quitting my job, taking a pay cut, and destroying my self esteem. Impossible to navigate the politics that run the purchasing dept. Constant “feedback” loop results in unnecessary negative conversations for the sake of saying feedback is being given. Individual development plans (IDP’s) are a constant for everyone — apparently they think this shows managements ability to manage people (which most senior managers lack). Zero ability to report negative experience without retaliation. Every conversation EVERY SINGLE ONE with someone you haven’t guaranteed a personal friendship with is reported to a manager. It’s encouraged. While you are in training you are viewed as “less than” and you have no voice. No matter the experience you bring- you know nothing and you will be treated as such by every other person in the purchasing department. Senior management can not admit to faults - even when presented with hard evidence, and that breeds hypocrisy, lying, and suck-up teachers-pet types being given leeway for any rule infraction.

Pros

matches up to 6% 401k company values IF they were followed and thats a big IF bc they aren't.

Cons

No room for advancement, Expected to have certain numbers and percentages even if it meant working 3-4 extra hours a night, but no slack on being even 1 minute late. Severely Micromanaged to the point of affecting job performance, impedes ability to do job when you keep having sit down meetings all the time., Management is trash especially the LGM specifically who was so unprofessional he would fight with sales people in the middle of the sales floor when in disagreement also lied to corporate when called to investigate. overall extremely unprofessional. also commission was the lowest of any sales job I've had in my sales career even for car sales.
