Pros

- Very technical staff in AT&T Labs - Good pay and bonus - Excellent work/life balance - Good benefits - Excellent 401K company contribution - People are nice and generally team players. Good culture of service to customer to strive to do the right for them.

Cons

- Constant downsizing - Need to concentrate on long term investment - No growth because business is not growing - No promotion opportunities, almost every 6 to 12 months downsizing of staff can be demoralizing.

Pros

Paid days off, 401k match (~4%), employees overall very intelligent. Most Supervisors and Directors do not micro-manage so that makes the job tolerable on most days.

Cons

No opportunity for advancement or lateral career moves. A great raise is typically 2% or less. Yearly strategic objectives are approved during the 2nd quarter. Objectives are set so that it is virtually impossible to earn 100% (or even 90%)of your bonus.Everyone is rated on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being high but no one is usually rated higher than a 3. Management has too many people who do very little work but can talk about "it" for days. Most of the BellSouth management staff has been downsized in the "merger" with AT&T. AT&T's mentality is still in the 1960's and 70's on a good day. In my area, minorities (women as well) were the lowest paid managers in the department, regardless of years of service or education.
