Pros

There is a lot of really cool technology to learn and play with every day. You will literally step over or around robots in the halls everyday. The work life balance is great, and you will be rewarded for getting results regardless of the number of hours you work. The engineers are extremely sharp and hardworking. There are great career advancement opportunities, and iRobot strives to promote from within and train its workforce. In my time there I went from associate to principal engineer, then into engineering management. I cannot say enough great things about what iRobot has done to provide me with career development opportunities.

Cons

There is a very odd engineering management dynamic. Many engineering leaders are not competent in the core areas of iRobot products and are disconnected from product / program teams. In the last few years, software has become more important to iRobot, but the management team has not been able to keep up with the trend. Only 1 or 2 program managers are actually interested in engaging their software team members and many competency managers seem unable or uninterested in working on programs. It creates a lot of unnecessary confusion and frustration for the people working on these teams.

Pros

The work is outstanding- very rewarding, very enthralling mechanical work. As a mechanical engineer, you sit on top of the engineering food chain. And there is no short supply of things to do.

Cons

Having worked at several other companies, their pay is stingy- and this is a strategy of the company as a whole: hire young guns and hire them at the upper end of the salary spectrum. Your pay will be frozen until you're frustrated enough to leave, and they then will give you a counter that is massive, to catch you up to the status quo of the level of your work. I was offered a 20k salary bump and a promotion when I put in my notice. It made me upset as their strategy, and practice became evident.

Pros

A lot of high skilled and talented employees in ALL areas Great pay and benefits Wonderful vacation time

Cons

Really odd purchasing process, take way to long to buy something Different organizational units are completely out of sync This company of 600 is run likes it's a company of 100,000, NGC/Lockheed and Boeing are more efficient and have less red tape Program management here is very weird, extremely inefficient, can't seem to make decisions. Everyone is passing the buck.
