Pros

1) Tons of food given to in-house employees. 2) Very relaxed setting to the point you just make sure to fill out your time sheet. 3) Monthly staff meetings with gourmet food and picnics the company pays for to keep the in-house employees happy. 4) You can come and go as you please as long as you do the work. 5) The employees are definitely hard workers especially with the amount of workload each employee takes on. 6) Someone always get employee of the month plus a gift card that could be $25-100.

Cons

1)This company breaks American Labor Laws, but since all contractors are paid via UK, the contractors are given excuse after excuse about not being paid on time (according to the contract). All contractors are paid late or not at all. The contract is 30-day but they pay 31-60 or more. For example one person wasn't paid for more than 9 months. 2) The company abuses "temporary" workers and encourage false hope. For example, they brought contractors in to the office and were told to create projects they did not know how too, nor responsible for. The company will take creative ideas and implement them from competing companies. This company lost a lot of work for various reasons and had to lay people off. 3) Human resource,COO,CEO are all well aware of contractors not being paid and even "prioritize" who should get paid first. For example, a number of transcribers protested the company because they were'nt being paid, so this affected the quality and deadline thus losing clients.

An Honest Review

Pros

I worked at ZOO Digital for a considerable period of time and unfortunately, my experience left me with mixed feelings. It's important to be upfront about the pros and cons of working here, and my primary intention is to provide an honest perspective to potential employees and feedback advice to those who can make improvements. Please don't overlook this review and think this is just from some disgruntled former employee. I will try and be as honest and open as I can be. Global Experience: The company provides opportunities to work with international clients and projects, which can be a wonderful experience for those who enjoy diversity in their work. The clients were massive names and it was really fun working on different content on a daily basis. Growth Potential: It's worth mentioning that the company has shown the potential for future/further success. Despite the numerous challenges and issues I will mention, ZOO may eventually prosper in the industry further than it has done already. However, it's important to note that such growth will probably come with a significant shift in the structure of the UK office, which may impact existing employees and their roles. More on this later, but be prepared for potential changes in your job responsibilities and work environment from when you join. Resilient Employees: The UK team were lovely to work with and maintained a lot of their own personal values, despite going through such turmoil times. Everyone was really friendly and supportive. The UK project managers were always supportive despite being under what must be exceptional pressure to deliver projects with little resources internally. Capacity issues must have been a nightmare for them but they were always friendly and willing to assist other teams in order to make the day to day tasks a little easier for others. The technical QC team also deserves a big mention. They have been affected the most with the redundancies but still continued to deliver in their roles and at such an important stage of the localisation workflow. The English team and language team were also exceptionally friendly and supportive. It's hard not to give a big shout out to all of them for battling through each day and supporting the company. You'll love working with them. I'll miss you all! Working Frome Home: Many employees considered this the best thing about working at ZOO. The flexibility to work from home full time was a brilliant initiative and it helped everyone swap the stresses of commuting for more productivity at work. For many, it seemed to be the sole reason the majority of the company were happy to continue working there.

Cons

So here goes... Limited Career Opportunities: One of the most glaring issues at ZOO is the lack of career growth prospects. There is an overwhelming sense of stagnation among employees, with minimal chances for upward progression. Career development and opportunities for growth are almost non-existent. I'd say that is just a consequence of the current situation at ZOO, but it's always been like that. Minimal Training: While the job might seem exciting from the outside, be prepared for the reality that there is minimal training and support at the start. You are often left to your own devices, which can be overwhelming, especially for newcomers. This lack of training severely hampers professional development at the start. Later down the line when you're comfortable enough to do your job, there's little to no supportive training for your future career prospects. There was some effort that went into boosting training last year but it quickly dried up. Poor Morale: Morale at the company was fluctuant during my tenure. Many employees felt underappreciated, undervalued and underpaid. That was before 2023. It's easy to see why so many people are looking to leave now and it seems the company are happy to let them do so. I think there's a bit of arrogance they can just recruit new staff down the line that will have the same level of expertise of those leaving. If not that, offshore job roles to the offices abroad... more on that later. Mass Redundancies: The company has a history of mass redundancies, and job security was virtually non-existent when I left. These mass layoffs have created an atmosphere of insecurity and instability among the workforce. I was told this tends to happen after a couple of years again and again. This is obviously down to poor board management with poor planning for the future. Any employees still at ZOO know why this has happened this time. Really Low Pay: Compensation here is shockingly low, given the demands of the job and the industry standards. It's challenging to make ends meet, and this is a significant issue that most employees grapple with. The board claims to provide standard wages for the Sheffield area, but this assertion is totally false. In reality, the compensation falls well below industry standards, with other localisation companies in the North of England offering salaries ranging from 35k to 55k, which makes it challenging to meet the cost of living and can leave employees feeling undervalued/exploited. There's a very toxic stigma around those who are disgruntled with salaries. The response is just that the company cannot compete with those types of salaries and if people want to leave, they should. This doesn't just apply to newer employees, but those who have spent 4-5+ years at the company get the same response. It's a very valid issue across the company that salaries are too low and the response has never changed. I think this will really come back and bite them as experienced members have left due to the salaries and before I left it was already causing large problems. You can't replace the experience of those that have grown with the company and have shown loyalty by staying for so long. These people are not call center workers in entry level jobs. Inexperienced Managers: Another concerning aspect was the prevalence of inexperienced production managers. Many of the individuals in these key roles lack the necessary expertise and experience to effectively manage teams and projects. This inexperience often leads to inefficiencies, miscommunications, emotional turbulence and a lack of effective leadership, which can hinder the overall work environment and job satisfaction. It's not their fault either, the little training combined with urgency to fill management roles means inexperienced employees have to make that step up for fear of losing any career progression. Outdated Internal Software: ZOO's reliance on its own internal software for localisation falls behind industry competitors. The outdated tools and software can make the localisation process more cumbersome and less efficient. This can result in longer work hours and greater frustration for employees who are trying to keep up with more modern and streamlined solutions offered by other companies in the industry. You only need to look on competitor websites to see how good their software is. Offshoring Operations: Everyone can see a developing practice of reassigning roles and responsibilities to the offices abroad. While this may not be direct exploitation, it does contribute to the challenging work environment in the UK due to job insecurity and shifting responsibilities. It created uncertainty for employees who may see their roles changing or diminishing. Those who question if this is true should see the job openings being published in offices abroad after making so many redundant in the UK and US.

ZOO Digital Group Response
2y
We appreciate your taking the time to share this feedback. This is a lot of thoughtful feedback and will be shared with leadership team at ZOO, to see how we can improve. The past year has been a challenging time for the industry and the company as streaming providers have refocused, reorganised, cut budgets and writers and actors have been on strike for extended period which did result in the company needing to make some redundancies. Learning and development is extremely important to ZOO and we are proud to provide employees with unlimited access to our online training covering over 5000 courses. ZOO focuses heavily on internal mobility and promoting from within as our staff are the best in the industry. We are also developing an internal management and leadership programme to best equip both new and existing managers with the skills required to manage effective and engaged teams. We continue to review market insights to best align our salary structure and undergo benchmarking of all our roles on an annual basis. Whilst we expand our global footprint, some locations will expand as we aim to put certain resources as close to local markets as possible. We are working hard to ensure we create balance between all facilities. Every geographical territory is equally important and we balance that with also ensuring that we constantly consider each territory's unique requirements (both staff and customers). Finally, we value all of the contribution of our ZOO workforce and glad to hear about your positive employee interactions.

Pros

Seems like it would be a decent company to work for, however, I can't say for myself since they just took my trial translations that I did for them for free and never responded to me since. I have followed their guidelines for formatting and translating and was not heard from after they took my translation.

Cons

I don't want to accuse any company of scamming, but I have translated pages worth of movie subtitles for this company, which genuinely took me a long time and I was told I would be reached out to once they look into my test. It has been 3 months, I have emailed multiple times, no word from this company after they took my translation...
