Gaslighting at its Worst

Pros

Work from home. Professional development opportunities. Reimbursement for phone and Internet. Annual bonus. Opportunities to travel around the world to exciting places. Many great team members to work with who become lifelong friends (like friends you bond with during a war or other traumatic experience).

Cons

Working here is like being in an abusive relationship. Everything starts off great, but a few months in you realize you've been fooled by promises that will never come to fruition and people begin to show their true colors. This is a membership organization for some of the world's wealthiest (mostly) men. Many of the members are inspiring and a joy to work with, however one or two difficult members can make your life miserable -- especially on a long-term project. My first year here a member threatened to kill me, in writing, for a mistake in an email. Not only was nothing done (it was explained to me that the members are very "passionate" and he was likely not serious, just letting off steam), this was seen as par for the course. Members are regularly verbally abusive to the management team (mostly women), and have successfully gotten women fired when they don't get their way. If you are a woman and you stand up for yourself in any way you get labeled as aggressive and a troublemaker. You're expected to work 24/7, 80-100 hours a week and only get paid for 37 hours. If you don't do this you get told you're not a team player. Good luck trying to take any time off without getting called or texted by your boss as early as 6 a.m. during your vacation for things that aren't actual emergencies. Most everyone leaves vacation time on the table at the end of the year as it is simply not possible to take time off and get your work done as there is often no one to cover when you're out of the office. You're given 100% accountability and only 10% authority to do your job. Disclosing these problems to HR does nothing to help fix the situation. One or two people are often expected to execute a workload that in other organizations would be spread out between multiple departments. The technology is at least five years behind so you don't have the resources or tools to do what is being asked; many processes are still manual. I have had a lot of jobs in high powered organizations, but this is the only place I have worked where people take medical leave for stress, which was caused by the job. The CEO and COO work people to the bone and lead with fear and threats. This is the most unethical place I have ever worked, and I'm ashamed I stayed as long as I did. By the time you realize you need to leave this place you're so beaten down and exhausted you think you don't deserve any better.

Thank you for your feedback and insights. What you have shared in your post is very concerning. The mistreatment of a team member by a peer, supervisor or member is never condoned nor expected. Over the past several years, key processes have been put into place to ensure team members have a comfortable way to report issues – including EthicsPoint, our third-party/confidential reporting tool by Navex Global. We are so glad you suggest listening to the engagement survey. As we have conducted this survey each of the past three years with nearly 100% participation. We have gained great insights into what is important to team members, what is working and where we need to improve. Thank you for providing your feedback.

Pros

YPO continues to evolve dynamically and innovatively. The organization is in a growth and high change mode and although that creates stress and tension it is a very exciting time. Engagement is at a high.

Cons

Continual care and communication with team members is important. Listening to pain points can be improved.

Thank you for your feedback. Having an individual, healthy life/work integration strategy and actively listening to the pain points of our organization are very important to our senior leadership team. We gather team member feedback annually through our engagement survey and, as a result, an engagement taskforce subcommittee is now in place and has already begun gathering ideas and building recommendations on how we can continue to set the tone and make continued improvements in this area.

Pros

Good staff training on service topics.

Cons

Lack of gender equality in staff and membership! BEWARE! Teams of women expected to service needs of demanding, wealthy men. No work/life balance. 24/7 culture is helpful to members but horrible for staff. I worked 14-16 hour days regularly, and this was expected. Culture of fear with regular restructuring! CEO loves to try "flavor of the day" organizational structures.

Thank you for your feedback and insights. Like every organization, YPO is not the environment for everyone. YPO has a strong culture as a fast-paced organization made up of predominately female professionals with approximately 65% of the workforce working remotely in 27 different countries. With a highly engaged workforce who is committed to the organization’s mission, we are focused on the work/life aspect for our people. YPO is undergoing dynamic changes from technology to strategy to ensure relevancy for our future membership. These exciting times naturally bring about stress from changes while delivering top programs to the YPO membership.
