Worst company I have ever worked for

Pros

I met one person who was great.

Cons

Everything, this company is a joke and I'm shocked that they are still in business purely because employees are quitting left and right. Multiple people quit within my first week of joining. This place completely lacks empathy. - Their managers have no idea how to manage - not sure if it's lack of training but their poor skillset causes a poor work environment. - No flexibility - not only did we have little to no holidays but on those holidays, we were asked to commute into the office in dangerous weather and blizzards when the city of Boston told people to stay off of the roads and stay indoors. - Lack of clarity on promotions - I met countless people who were there for 2+ years without ever getting promoted. They were never told what to do in order to get a raise or if it would ever happen. There's no clarity whatsoever on potential career growth. - Popularity contest - it doesn't matter how hard you work. What matters is if upper management likes your outfits. - Zero work life balance - I was constantly working late and getting home at 9:30pm. I'd also get glares if I dared get up for lunch because everyone works through lunch at their desks like robots and it's frowned upon if you're not doing the same. - Underpaid - everyone there is making significantly less than market value and a lot of them don't know it because they're fresh out of college and they think that this toxic work environment and salary is normal. TLDR, this company needs a lot of help. Bless anyone who works there because leaving was the best decision I've ever made. I have too much respect for myself to ever tolerate a workplace like this and a business who doesn't value their employees.

Pros

Good stocks plan. This is actually the only argument they use to try to convince people to stay in the company. Good work-life balance

Cons

It has an old code with a collection of bad practices. Test coverage for example is less than 1%. The code quality will change significantly depending on the department you work at, and so will the culture. A team responsibility will change all the time and projects get canceled in mid of development without explanation. Engineers spend weeks or months on investigations that go nowhere. Communication between teams is poor and almost inexistent between engineering departments. I know a project that was canceled after 6 months of development because managers/director didn't knew they had 2 teams in the same department working on different solutions for the same problem. The review system became a tool for bad managers to threaten engineers and ensure they don't get negative reviews. Many of the managers are engineers who chose an easy way to get promoted. They lack the proper skillset, many can't communicate properly, don't know how to deal with people (special with the opposite sex). This has a direct impact on the performance of everybody bellow them. The company does nothing to solve the constant sexism in the workplace. There are people with multiple reports of sexual harassment but nothing is done about it. Directors tell you that you should try to solve the problems or at least communicate them, but anyone who raises problems gets punished. They try to sell the idea of a "cool startup workplace", but it's a hard corporative environment, where politics is more important than production. A place where lies and sabotage are common.

Not a good place to work

Pros

The Boston offices are in an easy location in Back Bay. You get discounts on Wayfair items.

Cons

The company grew with no planning. Team projects have ridiculous amounts of redundancy. The culture is fear-based so no-one bother to become an expert in anything. The engineering infrastructure is beyond creaky—it is nonfunctional. The company is known as a lousy place to work so you will have trouble finding work afterwards because their engineering is generally perceived as fifth-rate at best.
