Don't Ruin Your Career Here

Pros

Not many pros here other than an endless amount of free beer (which is heavily abused), a conveniently located and nice office, and a good Wayfair discount. For the most part, very friendly people also.

Cons

- The recruiters will lie to you about career advancement when there is none just to get you to work here - Most but not all managers are very unqualified for the roles they are in and do not belong managing people. They seem to only hire senior level people if they have an MBA which doesn’t automatically make you a good manager of people - They claim to "promote from within" but instead, they have employees constantly lateraling between departments because they get to a point where there is no more advancement left (usually at a low level under a manager) so they switch departments to do the same thing if you stay long enough - Working remote is frowned upon no matter the situation- All work and processes are manually done and they expect even high level employees to do data entry level work. Perhaps this is due to lack of engineering support or generalized creativity from senior management, could be a mix of both. This is 2019 and they call themselves a tech company when they are everything but that. They have the technology of a company that belongs in the 90s. - Pay is well under the industry standard in Boston (around 10k off) with the potential of a 2-4% increase per year. With the way they measure performance for pay, it will most likely be 2% (which doesn’t even meet Boston COL inflation) or they will give you no increase for the year - Perhaps one of the biggest cons is the way they measure your performance. They don't measure it on your personal performance, they measure against a curve compared to others at your own level. So you could work real hard and put in 120% effort every day and still get a low performance rating that is directly tied to your yearly bonus and salary. Wayfair loses tons of high potential, motivated employees almost every day due to this which is going to hurt the company in the long run - Because of this curve, people are very competitive in a negative way. Everyone is looking for the leg up and will not coordinate with each other because they fear one is going to get a better grade than the other. There are even some that try to sabotage you on peer reviews just to get ahead in the curve. The overall culture feels very fake. - If they give you a signing bonus and you leave in under a year, they will make you write a check back to them for the full amount they gave you in the beginning (and yes they follow through on it). As if you're unhappy enough with the above out of whack processes, you have to pay large amounts of money just to leave this toxic environment

Pros

Peer culture is strong and there is incredibly inspiring people working here. Creative has a seat at the table when making business decisions. Big swing projects are common and creative usually leads initiatives.

Cons

Management is unreliable and unfair, especially above the Creative Director level. Favoritism is a VERY real problem. Promotions are not merit based and infrequent. Over worked and severely under paid. Job titles do not match job descriptions. “Junior level” talent held responsible for senior level projects.
