Pros

Many advancement opportunities due to high turnover, particularly for entry level staff. Competitive compensation. Culture of training (to help fill constantly emerging skills gaps). Technically sound practice. Large, complex, high profile projects. Great place to learn as much and as fast as you’re capable if you’re willing to sacrifice quality of life short term.

Cons

Impersonal, detached experience. Low investment in office environment (university computer lab experience), inconsistent/poorly structured management where feedback/performance reviews are wholly detached from compensation, generally unfocused business culture, short sighted quarterly profit driven upper management (there’s currently an incentive to work through the holidays except Christmas Day, with an extra incentive if employees successfully peer pressure eachother into meeting a participation target. Mid-career can be stressful, low support, with a lower level of autonomy than at a company with a more local/smaller project focus. Feedback is constant, and can be impersonal/negative due to the complexity of projects (lots of room for mistakes) which can damage rapport on the company teams.

Pros

Decent pay for a natural resources engineer

Cons

This company has absolutely no positive culture in any way. Everything you hear about large companies treating you like "just another number" could not be more true for WSP. The only thing they care about is you working beyond 40 hours. In their "Marketing 101" seminar, we were literally told that their number one key to being good at earning new business is to "do it on your own time and your own dollar." We were also told that "you're either a winner or a whiner" with the latter being true if you're not willing to sell business on your own time beyond 40 hours. If you need a paycheck, go for it. Just don't expect good benefits on treatment like a real human being.

Terrible middle management and surprisingly archaic

Pros

The group of companies is responsible for some impressive work. Lots of talent there as well, though limited to a particular demographic. The Canadian arm of the company seems to be more progressive.

Cons

Do not work at this company if you are entrepreneurial, a woman, or a minority. If you have an inexperienced manager, make sure to communicate and document issues, and if you are unable to make headway, get out fast.
