Great business to be in but work culture leaves a lot to be desired

Pros

Good work-life balance, the stock is doing really well and the opportunity to learn VMware technologies that will eventually enable me to work for my own self. Great co-workers: smart and driven.

Cons

- Bad managers - Huge trust deficit - Scathing emails are regularly sent - Managers do not know how to communicate - Some AirWatch managers in position of power do not understand basic business principles either, talk about cannibalizing other teams' services without realizing - Southern culture sadly permeates this office: conscious and unconscious bias is on full display, respect for minorities severely lacking

Bad management

Pros

VMware has a relatively high base salary plus some other perks, but over the years the RSU is shrinking to almost nothing.

Cons

Bad management level, many managers don't even understand the project his group is doing. Most of the time, they just attend meetings, inquire engineers about some very basic concepts, pass messages and push people to fix bugs, meet deadlines and ask for more resources, that is it. No product vision, don't know how to allocate people and resources to get the job done. They only care about their promotions or keep the job, not the engineers. In VMware, if one is not technical, doesn't know programming, doesn't know how to manage people, but knows how to play politics. He must be a manager.

Pros

It was initially great with a great culture and help. I have got a few promotions based on my work. Not anymore after the new managers and team leads

Cons

Where shall I start. Career growth and opportunity of growth is something everyone says is there, but when I approached my management, I felt like I am begging for their mercy. I was even informed by my manager that he is not a career growth consultant that he will look after the growth and training, though it was mentioned during the all hands meeting that managers are responsible for growth The other issue was if you are buying coffee and act as a butler tot he managers, then only you are heard, otherwise their opinion about you is final, not the amount of deals helped to close or getting good reviews from the clients. It was obvious this is not a place to grow your career unless you add a skill of being a butler of a manager. I had some good memories and great platform which was ruined by these self obsessed managers.
